“One last thing” is one of the most tantalising phrases in press conference lingo and last nights Playstation 5 briefing featured a doozy. Before Jim Ryan said sayonara he cut away to one final teaser. Could it be the rumoured Silent Hill reboot? Bloodborne 2? The epic conclusion to the Knack saga? Such time to speculate was brief as it quickly became apparent that the falling snow was forming the God of War logo. It was God of War: Ragnarok.
As Nordic runes started to appear, it was clear this title would continue Kratos’ Norse mythology murder holiday even before the subtitle appeared: RAGNAROK.
God of War: Ragnarok!?
A word familiar to heavy metal and comic-book fans Ragnarok refers to the death of the gods. This is a key event in Norse myth, the series finale if you will. For Kratos and boy (also known as Atreus) this is an “all you can beat” buffet of warriors to slaughter. The first game featured ample Odin and Thor references so it seems likely you’ll fight against the Kardashians of Asgard.
Eurogamer journalist Zoe Delahunty-Light noticed that the logo seems to be in the shape of Jörmungandr, the World Serpent. He is said to have a massive role in the legend of Ragnarok so it seems we’ll meet him again.
Being developed for the PS5 hardware God of War: Ragnarok has a projected release date of 2021.
