Potterheads, we finally got the announcement we’ve been waiting for. Warner Bros. Games have officially announced Hogwarts Legacy during the PlayStation Showcase last night. Developed by Avalanche and published by Warner Bros. Games under the Portkey Games label, Hogwarts Legacy will release in 2021 on everything except for Nintendo Switch. But now we have to ask the question: what is Hogwarts Legacy?
Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world, single-player, action RPG. That’s a lot of things, I know. But this isn’t necessarily going to be the Hogwarts we all know and love. We are being brought all the way back to the 1800s! Now, with the likes of Fantastic Beasts we’ve seen the Wizarding World of the early 1900s.
Warner Bros. has us set to experience the student life like never before! The player will be the centre of their own adventure, with the ability to follow their own path to become the witch/wizard they want to be. Through magical education, immersive spells, building friendship and honing combat skills, players will get to live the unwritten history of Hogwarts.
So, what does all of this mean for Harry Potter fans?
Throughout the years, we have had many different looks at the Wizarding World. From the main series, we got the spin-off novella The Tales of Beedle the Bard. We’ve had spin-offs in the form of “school books”. In conjunction with the movies, we got video games. To this day, I still love the first three games on PC. In recent years, we’ve had Fantastic Beasts. We’ve also had the mobile game Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery. Let’s not forget that you can pretty much get Harry Potter anything these days too. Surely the market is already overly saturated? This is where I think (and hope) Hogwarts Legacy will make a difference. Instead of rehashing the older material, they’re creating something new.
I grew up with Harry Potter. It was the first movie I ever saw in cinemas, and was the first game I ever completed. Although I am excited, there is still a part of me that is worried about getting my hopes up. I would love to know what everyone else thinks and how you all feel about this upcoming game!
