CD Projekt Red and The Witcher author Andrezej Sapkowski have announced a new deal following a year-long dispute over compensation for CD Projekt Red’s video game adaptation of the Polish fantasy novels.

This likely came about because The Witcher has debuted on Netflix. The two parties announced that on December 20th, they’ve “entered into an agreement which solidifies and reinforces [CD Projekt Red’s] relationship with Mr. Andrzej Sapkowski – author of The Witcher saga.”

In response to the news, CD Projekt CEO Adam Kiciński said, “We’ve always admired Mr. Andrzej Sapokowski’s works — a great inspiration for the team here at CD Projekt Red. I believe today marks a new stage in our continued relationship.”

It’s funny because Sapkowski never believed that his stories would find success within the video game medium. He didn’t want a high percentage but over the years that has changed as the franchise has found an incredible new home on consoles and PC. Now with the likely success of the Netflix series starring Henry Cavill, Freya Allan and Anya Chalotra.

What could this deal mean for The Witcher?

This deal is fascinating to me because I wonder might gamers see a new Witcher game in the near future. With the end of the third game there is something of an end to the story of Geralt of Rivia. Now that’s not to say there are other opportunities out there and with Sapakowski now on board for a larger partnership there are several options available:

  1. There could be a new Witcher game that follows Geralt after the events of the third game.
  2. There could be a build your own Witcher game where you the player create a whole new Witcher
  3. There are stories that could be told in a prequel-esque manner.

This is an exciting time for fans of the franchise so be sure and stay tuned to GamEir. Also, be sure and converse with us on Twitter (@gam_eir), Facebook (@GamEir), and Instagram (@GamEir). Check out our videos on Twitch (GamEir) and YouTube (GamEir) and we’ll give you all the latest content.
