Your favourite horror queen is back! And today, I’ve got a treat for you! It’s time to talk about The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters. I got to play this spooky adventure on the Switch, which made bedtime much more interesting. Being a Switch port review, expect some differences!

Now, what is The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters?

The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters is a Korean survival horror-adventure, set in the Sehwa District. One thing to note is that although this game is a sequel, The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters is not a DIRECT sequel. By this, I mean you can just jump right into the game without playing the first. This was something I learned AFTER majorly struggling with the first. I suck guys, we all know this. Don’t get me wrong here, I did have fun with the first game. But I would also have had more fun if I hadn’t been trying to get through it to understand what was going on here. You live and you learn.

With The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters, you follow Mina Park after she wakes up in Sehwa High, where it soon becomes apparent something is amiss. In an attempt to survive, Mina must venture throughout the district, all while being chased by what looks to be her teacher. This base story is similar to the first game but takes things a step further into darkness.

The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters originally hit Steam early access back in November of 2019, and got its full release in January of this year on PC, Xbox and PS4. However, that’s not what we’re going to be discussing today. Today, we’re talking about the Switch port, that hit shelves a couple of weeks ago.

A side-scrolling spookfest?

Before we get into details, I do want to point out that this game IS a 2D side-scroller. I personally feel like that style nowadays only really works on handheld consoles. Again, that is just my preference. It’s a style that works well for platformers in general, but can be hit or miss otherwise. So, when I first learned about the Coma series, I was very on the fence. I didn’t understand how a horror game specifically could work as a side scroller. We’ve talked about tropes a billion times over, so I won’t go on that tangent again. However, when you think of modern horror games, how many of us think about side scrollers? Not me, that’s for sure.

Remember that old phrase “don’t judge a book by its cover?” Yeah, that. When I started this adventure, I had on my big judgement hat. Kidding, but I was prepared for the worst. That was just my own precognition. I did like the idea of the story though, so I was content enough to press play. Once again, don’t judge a book by its cover, especially if you’re me. Maybe I wouldn’t have enjoyed this as much if I hadn’t been playing on Switch. Honestly, I probably would have hated the gameplay on any other platform. Complete honesty? Had I set up the Switch with my TV, I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it either. I’m not normally so picky, but with this style, I nitpick.

Horror Queen’s Feelings

Having the ability to play fully handheld is what kept me going. I do really like the story, I think the concept is really cool. The gore moments are also really nicely implemented. The characters are well thought out and makes playing all that more interesting. The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters coming to Switch was the best thing that could happen for gamers like myself. Something extra cool about this game is the new and improved AI used for Dark Song, our antagonist.

Being up close when she appears really adds to the fear factor of the game. Now imagine being curled up in bed, in the dark, and then BAM. Dark Song is right up behind you and you’re about to die. This felt so much more impactful to me on a handheld platform. The depth of field is smaller, you’re not overly zoomed in, and when you can play in such a comfortable setting, you are lured into a false sense of security.

But what’s the final verdict?! The Switch port of The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters is a big YES from this slothy horror queen. We get a solid story, and pretty decent gameplay, paired with a great, spooky setting. If you enjoy sidescrollers, you’ll enjoy this on any platform. If like me, you’re not a fan, a Nintendo Switch in handheld mode is the way to go!
