The latest entry from the Disgaea franchise, Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless is another feather in the cap of the studio Nippon Ichi Software. It’s wild, colourful and funny.
This latest entry follows Fuji, a wandering warrior who happens across a super-rich otaku who is looking to conquer the Netherworld of Hinomoto. Along the way, they’ll fight bonkers bosses, team up with even weirder characters and wield impressive and interesting weapons.
Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless is full of that distinct Disgaea charm. There is sharp humour, and the storytelling is told through a gorgeous hand-drawn visual novel. The combat hasn’t changed that much. You still command an army that you recruit through various means. You can recruit them through the shop, raising them from humble beginnings, or you can go out and beat bosses who then decide to join you or as the game progresses you can go back to past areas and find powerful new recruits and battle them for their loyalty.
As you take on the many enemies rallied against you in the game, Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless pushes you to be the best commander of your wandering warriors. There are high levels of strategy in this game. Especially when you bring in new abilities like Jumbification. This new skill allows you to basically grow your favourite character to an immense size. They will do gargantuan damage but they will be left wide open to attack. This transformation is best used when your opponent has also jumbified.
If it’s not broke don’t fix it
Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless does not break the mould. The Jumbification and the multiplayer mode are the only major new elements in the franchise. I’ve not had a chance to play the multiplayer yet, unfortunately. Everything else has been refined but has been in the franchise for a while. If you’ve played previous entries, you’ll be right a home here.
Much like every other Disgaea, there are moments in this game where the difficulty shoots up and when that happens I found myself struggling to enjoy the game. I can’t handle the multiple strategies that a player can take to grow. It’s an unfortunate side effect of the incredible success of this franchise. I genuinely wish I was more savvy so that I could fully immerse myself in the strategic world of Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless.
Regardless of my lack of skills, this is still a fantastic new entry in the celebrated franchise. If you’re a fan, there is a lot to love here.
