The Mortal Kombat franchise has always been big and in your face so it wasn’t a surprise that after their biggest game to date, Ed Boon and co. at NetherRealm Studios decided to add a little something extra with Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath.
The story of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath brings us seconds after (MK11 story spoiler) Lui Kang has defeated the new big bad, Kronika, the Titaness and who happens to be the Keeper of Time. After her defeat, Lui Kang takes control of the hourglass of time and with the help of Raiden, the now-former Elder God looks to reshape history but is stopped by returning characters in the shape of Shang Tsung, Fujin and Nightwolf.
The return of the great pretender
Going into Aftermath I was wondering why they needed to add onto a story that was already pretty good to begin with. It was epic. The conclusion I came up with was I think they just wanted to but in doing so they could also bring in the new DLC characters, well the Mortal Kombat canon ones at least and I was not mad at this one bit, as one of, if not the best video game baddie got to showcase himself in this new DLC, Shang Tsung.
I really enjoyed the playthrough from start to finish as it took nothing away from the base story it just gave us another fun timeline with an unlikely Suicide Squad if you will. If you have played Injustice 2 you will be happy with the crossroads choice section at the end as they have continued this trend in Aftermath.
More than meets the eye
Along with the continuation of the story we were also given new stages to fight in like the fun Retrocade where the background screen shows you different stages of the original Mortal Kombat and the Deadpool which is just a revamped Acid pit stage. The theme for Aftermath seems to be “give the people more” as we got loads of skin packs, augmentations and equipment for the existing characters. There is also the return of the very popular Friendship finisher that has Robocop doing the….yes you guessed it, the robot and who doesn’t want to see that.
With the new content also came new fighters in the shape of Robocop, Sheeva and Fujin. This brought new interactions and one of my favourites of these was the Robocop vs Terminator comic nod. The whole Aftermath DLC just felt big and it was in the shape of all the downloads, this is where it failed a bit as there was the original update to support the new content and you had to individually download each new character from the store and even download the new story. It was inconvenient but that’s it really.
All in all Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath is worth the money in a lot of ways and is what additional content can be when done right.
