What was once full of life, nature, and vibrant beauty is now overtaken by an ominous defilement and the Seethe, throwing those who live on it into turmoil. Sway, slash, and strategise your way to the Torii gates as Soh, the guardian whose goal is to protect the mountain’s Maiden Yoshiro from the sinister Seethe. The Maiden of the mountain is blessed with sacred powers that purge the defilement through majestic, ceremonial kagura dances.

With this brand-new IP brought to life by the Capcom RE ENGINE, players can explore a fresh take on the tactical action genre rich with striking visual designs, various Japanese cultural inspirations, and a unique day-to-night gameplay cycle. Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess features a ton of new and fresh gameplay elements.

• A Unique Day/Night Cycle: During the day, players explore the village, purify the “defiled” villagers, assign those villagers various roles, and choose where to place them in order to best protect the Maiden Yoshiro and prepare for sundown. When night falls, Soh and the villagers must work together to protect Yoshiro against the hordes of emergent Seethe as they spill out of the Torii gates that are spread throughout the mountain.
• Encountering Diverse Villagers: As residents of Mt. Kafuku, the villagers need to be saved from the defilement and assigned various roles so they can aid in the battle against the Seethe. Learn the different characteristics of each villager’s role, including Woodcutters, Ascetics, Archers and more to prepare the villagers for a fierce fight. Players can also upgrade villager roles to get more support and issue commands to the villagers while fighting alongside them to defeat the Seethe and purify each village.
• Taking on the Sinister Seethe: When night falls, the Seethe will emerge from the other world. As they target the Maiden with a variety of terrifying attacks, it is up to the protagonist Soh to use dance-like sword techniques and command the villagers. Decide whether you should focus on close-quarters melee attacks yourself or support tactics. Test your strategic abilities with the constantly changing battlegrounds and different Seethe variants.

Deck of Souls is an early-access deck-building roguelite. It’s a tried and tested formula, and while Deck of Souls doesn’t do anything particularly innovative, it does what it does well. The art style is simple but consistent, the sound effects and music are excellent and unobtrusive, and the gameplay has enough variety and replayability to immerse you. Let’s get into it!

What’s the skinny? How does Deck of Souls work?

In a series of turn-based combats, you draw and play cards against a variety of well-drawn enemies. You get to play one card per enemy, so combats feel pretty fair and balanced. Like many games in the genre, success in Deck of Souls relies on building a repertoire of cards that synergise with one another.

For example, on one of my more successful runs, I managed to make a build that relied on piling on armour and block to take enemies down. Of course, it’s all luck of the draw – but isn’t that what makes roguelites fun?

Combats and encounters are linked together on an FTL-style map. You can see what flavour of encounter is ahead – be that a fight, a random encounter, a chance to level up etc. – and choose your optimal path.

Defeating enemies grants you souls of various flavours, which you can use to level up your character’s stats or equipment. Bit grim. But we love it.

Story & Art

I’m a big fan of the art style in Deck of Souls. It’s pixelated, but more than detailed enough to know what you’re looking at. It’s colourful without being overwhelming and super consistent.

My one qualm with the art, however, is the UI. It feels a bit programmer-art, a bit placeholder. I can’t be sure if that’s a stylistic choice or if it’s due to be revisited, though. For now, it’s a bit lacking.

The music is great, really helps to set the grim fantasy vibe.

The story is hidden in dialogue with NPCs you encounter and beat the crap out of. There’s a tale of divinity, rebelling agents of higher powers, and redemption. The joy for me in Deck of Souls was discovering the story as I went and figuring out my own character’s motivations, so I won’t be spoiling it here. Suffice it to say, I really like the writing in this game!

Final verdict: Is it worth a go?

I would say if any of the above appeals to you at all, give Deck of Souls a chance. In places, it still feels a bit unpolished, but overall, it has promise. If roguelites or deck builders are in your wheelhouse, this will be a good entry. It fills a Slay the Spire-shaped hole. At less than a tenner, the price is great too.

As the developers move through early access, they have a roadmap of features that, refreshingly for an early-access game, seem realistic and achievable. I’ll certainly be sticking with the development of this one and returning for future updates.

By playing this mission players will be able to get the PAC-MAN-themed emblem and use it on their Gunpla.

CRAFTS & MEISTER Co., Ltd develops GUNDAM BREAKER 4 and will have players fighting their enemies solo or with up to two friends in co-op multiplayer. In addition, the game goes back to the roots of the franchise. This lets players create the Gunpla of their dreams with a large collection of mobile suits and parts to date. As well as a new diorama mode.

The game’s demo will be available during the Japan Expo Paris at the Bushiroad Games booth. Following the announcement of M. Daisuke Ishiwatari, CCO of Arc System Works, ASWE will also organise several special animations for this occasion.

A video game developer and publisher that has gained international recognition for its innovative and spectacular combat systems with 2D and 3D illustrations through licenses such as Guilty Gear, Arc System Works is extending its influence and activities in Europe with a new Arc System Works Europe subsidiary in Paris.

It’s exciting to see a new HUNTER×HUNTER project coming. After all, I myself am a huge fan of both the anime and manga. I’m looking forward to what this might mean for the franchise as a whole.
