This past weekend, many players, myself included, played the Open Beta of Tekken 8. I have to be honest, I’ve not played a Tekken title since the arrival of Jin in Tekken 3. That’s right folks, it has been 26 years since I’ve been in the ‘King of Iron Fist Tournament’.

So how did I fare entering the arena after roughly two-and-a-half decades? Not too bad actually, as long as I understood what Tekken 8 is and what it has asked of me.

Bloody and broken, but raring to go

Tekken 8 is insane and I mean that in the best possible way. First, the boring technical jargon – the game ran pretty smoothly. There were frame drops, it stuttered about half the time but it never took me out of a fight. When I lost it was because of my lack of skill, and when I won, it was because the stars aligned and I had become a better fighter.

To become a great fighter there are several new features that I was impressed by. There is the HEAT STATE which is a state which increases your damage and allows you to turn the tables at a moment’s notice. There is also the POWER CRUSH which is a kind of counter, the timing has to be bang but the results are impressive. Then as battles intensify and players reach the end of their ropes you can enter RAGE MODE! This final ditch attempt to win a fight allows you to unleash even stronger attacks and unleash a visually impressive final attack.

Sufficed to say the Open Beta for Tekken 8 has been an absolute blast for me. From its stunning visuals, surprisingly emotive score and intense battle, I can’t wait to see the final product on release.
