Back in 2019, before the end times, the long time ago, I was lucky enough to receive a review code for Mortal Kombat 11. It was an absolute treat, once again NetherRealm Studios had outdone themselves. Graphically it knocked me down, gameplay-wise it stunned me and with its stellar story, I found myself receiving a K.O. Now a year on, NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games return with the procedural definitive edition that comes out for each Mortal Kombat Title. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate is the ultimate kombat experience for gamers who were good little girls and boys and waited for all those extra characters, skins as well as an additional story DLC.

Going into Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate I thought I knew what I was getting into, I was wrong, however. When I picked up my controller after being months away from the arena I found myself blown away by the additional content on hand.

Not only were there a slew of additional skins, themed for various holidays (the Halloween event is particularly cool), there are several new impressive new characters that have been introduced to the already packed roster. With the base roster of 25 in Mortal Kombat 11, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate bumps it with an additional 12 fighters and these fighters are some heavy hitters from the MK universe and beyond. Check out the list below:

  • The Joker
  • Nightwolf
  • Shang Tsung
  • Sindel
  • Spawn
  • The Terminator
  • Fujin
  • RoboCop
  • Sheeva
  • John Rambo
  • Mileena
  • Rain

Building the ultimate tournament in Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate

Along with these characters who have so many nuanced combos and insanely gory brutalities and fatalities, players who buy this game also get access to Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath. This sequel/epilogue to the main storyline introduced several fan favourites to Mortal Kombat 11. It’s a great addition to the story of Mortal Kombat 11 and builds on the replayability and depth of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate.

Perhaps the greatest element of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate is its presentation. It looks phenomenal. I cannot gush enough about how this looks. I’m currently playing on the PlayStation 4 and the designs of each character and the layouts of the various levels you find yourself fighting in are impressive. The game never slowed down, there were no stuttering issues. One of the most impressive elements here came from the transition from the cutscenes to the actual kombat. The transitions were close to seamless, so I can only imagine how phenomenal they are on the next-gen consoles.

When it came to the online features I found them as welcoming as they were in the vanilla version of Mortal Kombat 11. I still found them insanely punishing due to my lack of proper skill. There were moments of being dropped from a game for no reason, but that didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment.

Finish him!

Ultimately, I found Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate one of the best gaming experiences of 2020. Returning to this world was an absolute joy. Between the deluge of new content and characters, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate is bursting with content. It is also an absolute steal with its price tag hovering around €40.00.

If you’re stuck for a Christmas gift for the gamer in your life then look no further.
