It’s nearing that time of year again when footballers will scramble to social media to celebrate or cry about their latest EA FIFA ratings. Yes FIFA 23 is just a few weeks away so let’s take a look and see what we know so far.
It’s a funny old game
At this point, FIFA gameplay feels pretty copy and paste to the usual diehard fans. That being said, EA has announced some tweaks and additions to the formula.
The biggest of these is cross-play. After the feature was tested in FIFA 22, EA confirmed that it will feature in FIFA 23 and will be available at launch. This is a great addition and well overdue in my eyes. In FIFA 22 cross-play was tested only in Online Friendlies and Online Seasons. EA has confirmed it will expand on cross-play availability to more game modes for FIFA 23. As well as increasing the number of included platforms.
After the phenomenal success of the Women’s European Championship, women’s club football will be a feature for the first time in the game. You will be able to play “as women’s club teams in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and Division 1 Arkema from launch.
There will also be a well-applauded return of the FIFA World Cup. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar and 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand will make it into the game as post-launch content updates.
Evolving the game
EA is also plugging its HyperMotion2 technology for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Stadia versions. Building on the last iteration of the technology, EA is promising, with twice as much real match data capture. This will take FIFA 23 to over 6000 true-to-life football animations.
FIFA 23 will introduce new gameplay features like new skill moves, new power shots, new set pieces, and some improvements to defending for all players. Things like dribbling and jockeying will be more realistic and responsive, players will use pace in different ways depending on a mix of their height, agility, and strength, and goalkeepers will behave more realistically than they ever have before. However, players on the new-gen consoles, PC and Stadia will feel these changes more, unfortunately.
According to the official PlayStation blog, the game will feature 19,000+ players, 700+ teams, 100 stadiums, and 30+ leagues, so there’ll be plenty to dig into.
The Closed Beta is in full flow at the moment so hopefully, it is a hit with fans as I’m looking forward to this one. FIFA 23 will be released, on September 30th on Playstation 5, Playstation 4, Xbox X/S, Xbox One, PC and Stadia.
