Free League Publishing has announced their Kickstarter for Coriolis: The Great Dark. Now you might think this would be just an expansion like I did. How wrong was I, it pushes the game in a new direction and is a Coriolis 2.0. I got my hands on the PDF so let’s dive in.

Arabian Nights no more

Coriolis: The Great Dark is more than just a sequel to The Third Horizon. It expands the universe and drags the story away from the Middle East-influenced Science Fiction of the last books. The setting I thing is much cooler (pun intended). Coriolis: The Great Dark is set far beyond the last iteration of the game. Colony ships have fled the growing war and have followed a faint signal that many think could be the Nadir, sister ship to the Zenith.

As the signal dies the colonists are stranded in a dead system they call Jumuah. To make things worse the portal that should lead them out is dead. The colonists established a single city on an asteroid called, and I shit you not “‘The Ship City of Coriolis the Eternal and Jumuah the First and Last”. I know right but thankfully it gets shortened to City Ship. In true Coriolis style, they decide to send expeditions into the depts. Where they fight Alien ruins and a disease called the Blight.

A new System for a new system

To push home that Coriolis: The Great Dark is an updated version they have modified the previous rule system that flies more closely to the Year Zero Engine (YZE). This is a welcomed change as if you have played any Free League games you will be very familiar with how easy it is to use. Most changes are small like six attributes rather than the usual four, talents instead of skills.

The two big ones for me are no more Darkness Point mechanics. This is replaced with Hope because there is nothing worse than the loss of all Hope. The other is the new Delve mechanic. The group will make Delves into the ruins to retrieve artifacts. With each Delve the group will have to bring significant supplies, oxygen canisters, food, water, batteries, etc… or else they won’t be coming back. Each one has a difficulty rating (0-3) and markers that show what each character needs supply-wise to make it back. Plans will go out the window as unexpected monsters, blight, and sneaky NPC will ruin your day.

Beauty in the darkness

As usual, the book itself looks amazing. The artwork though different than The Third Horizon is still beautiful. It’s dark and lonely and for some reason has a feel of Event Horizon to me in contrast to the warmth of the last books.

In the pack you get Coriolis: The Great Dark, a quickstart book but you also get four pre-generated character sheets. These are for The Algebraist Apprentice with Bird, The Wreck Diver, The Guild Soldier, and The Vacuum Welder.

If you play Coriolis then you will get The Great Dark and if you don’t and want to start from the start then you better hurry up as Free League is discontinuing the printing of The Third Horizon. I would recommend this game especially if space exploration is your bag.

When Free League Publishing announced they would release another Lord of the Rings TTRPG my interest was piqued. I had already reviewed their latest LotR game, The One Ring. Then I found out it would be with the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) 5th Edition rules, I was excited. I have been playing D&D for the last two years so a chance to play it set in my favourite fantasy setting, Middle Earth was too hard to pass up. So let me tell you what Lord of the Rings 5E

The One Ring for Dummies (including myself)

So what are the differences between Lord of the Rings 5E and 2022’s The One Ring I hear you ask? Well other than the rules switch and certain RPG language changes there are not many. If you are familiar with The One Ring then you can really jump into this. On the other hand, if you’re a D&D player you will have to learn certain mechanics like, Fellowship score, Shadow points, and dealing with the all-seeing Eye.

The language changes are small. The Dungeon Master is a Loremaster, the characters are Player-heroes, races are now Cultures, and classes are renamed to Callings. There are also phases called Adventuring and Fellowship. Adventuring is broken up into Combat, Council, and Journey. Combat is, well combat. Council is the interaction you and your party have with NPC etc… And Journey is the traveling aspect of your time. Fellowship is when the heroes have downtime during their adventure. Where they can chat and relax or when the adventure is over.

I see you!

Shadow points and The All-seeing Eye are great mechanics and immerse you further into Tolkien’s world. You or your party member gain these by doing or witnessing evil acts. You can remove your Shadow points by using “Hardened Will” as long as it doesn’t match their Wisdom score. Players who have a Shadow score equal to their Wisdom go a bit crazy. They give into dark urges like betrayal, fear, and rage. If the Shadow takes hold you develop permanent flaws, or even worse get removed from the party altogether, Boromir style.

Adding the All-Seeing Eye into your game takes it up a notch. The Loremaster keeps track of all that you and your party get up to. Depending on what mix of cultures your party has the eye might be more aware of them. The more magic you use or Shadow points you accumulate will all add to the Eye’s awareness, even rolling 1’s brings his glare upon you. If the party finishes the adventuring phase without the Eye becoming aware of them, they remain hidden. If the Eye sees you then your adventuring will get harder. Something might go wrong, you might be betrayed or the enemies get stronger to fight. Basically, be good and stay under the radar.

Pack Old Bill up and away you go

Just like The One Ring, the Lord of the Rings 5E starter is stacked with what you need to jump in. You get the Core Rulebook, Shire Adventures book, and Loremaster’s screen with Rivendell Compendium. All of these are beautifully laid out. The artwork as usual is amazing and would not be out of place in any Tolkien book.

The Core rule book and The Shire Adventures book are the perfect way to get your party on the road. All in all, if you like D&D and Lord of the Rings then this is a no-brainer to pick up. Free League has taken what was done in The One Ring and slimmed it down and made it accessible across the board. I will hopefully in the near future get some people together and get stuck into this. Are you a curious explorer that longs for expeditions of the strange, peculiar and the marvellous? Well, Free League Publishing has announced that the remastered version of the acclaimed weird-fantasy tabletop roleplaying game Into the Odd will be officially released on October 4th.

Can you become the best in Bastion?

Bastion is the only city that matters. In its industrial age, it sits as the smoke-shrouded hub of mankind, surrounded by a world of lurking horrors and cosmic interference. The Underground spreads beneath our feet and the stars loom above. You are an Explorer, braving places too far for maps and too old for records. Your expeditions touch the bizarre, wondrous, and horrific. You search for riches, but also Arcana, mysterious devices with unnatural powers.

What is Into the Odd?

Into the Odd Remastered is a rules-light, flavour-heavy roleplaying game of industrial horror and cosmic strangeness. This new edition of Into the Odd from 2014 revisits Industrial Bastionland, giving the original game a lavish hardback, full-colour restoration with expanded content.

  • Fast Character Creation – Roll an explorer in minutes, grabbing a starter package of flavourful equipment and starting your expedition.
  • Minimalist Rules – An ultralite system that keeps the game moving forward. Combat is fast and decisive, with every turn counting.
  • Strange Things – Monsters are horrific hazards, not opponents to be fought for sport. Arcana are weird artefacts that each carry a unique ability, from firing portals to attracting bones like a magnet.

Into the Odd Remastered is now available for pre-order in the Free League webshop. A pre-order will give immediate access to the PDF ahead of the release.

If like me, you find it hard to get a group of friends together for a games night then you are in luck. Free League Publishing has released a solo version of The One Ring RPG called The One Ring: Strider Mode.

Now I knew solo board games existed but I had never heard of solo TTRPGs (Tabletop Roleplaying games). So I was very interested to see how it all comes together as there is no GM to set the tone and story. Let us see how my brain got on trying to figure this out.

Who needs a Fellowship?

Straight off the bat, Strider Mode gives you a rundown on what it is all about and how solo roleplaying works. This was a great start as I was a complete novice. Going into this and needed all the help I could get.

In Strider Mode there is no Loremaster, you choose who and what you do by a series of tables and dice rolls. In this game, there are three tables, the telling table, the lore table, and The Fortune and Ill-fortune tables. Each table helps you get the answers you will need to further your adventures.

Just like in the core game itself you have the Adventuring phase and Fellowship phase. Obviously, these differ in Strider Mode and the rules are modified to reflect that you are alone and not in a group. In the Adventuring phase for example there are no roles assigned during journeys instead you react to situations as they happen. The Fellowship phase is relatively the same, you will use this time to rest, heal or talk with your Patron.

Aragon… Get the tables

The hardest thing I found about Strider mode was all the tables involved. It took me a couple of re-reads and a Youtube video or two to finally get my head around things. It’s not that I am a slow learner I think it was more of the concept of solo playing a TTRPG that was stunting me.

I found the tables to be oracle-like and later found out that in the solo-RPG world that is what they are called. They do different things and really impact the story you are on. The Telling table is the broadest and is for mainly yes or no questions. Roll 6 or higher for a yes etc… The lore table is a bit more complex. It has twelve tables with three columns (Action, Aspect, and Focus) that all add to your scene. The Fortune and Ill-Fortune Tables are used to push the events around you in different directions. If you roll either the Gandalf Rune or the Eye of Sauron when resolving a skill check, you can reference these tables to see what else contributed to your positive or negative luck.

If you really think about it, it is strange. You pretty much just sit there with a pen, paper, some dice, and your imagination and that’s it. I don’t know why it seemed alien to me. In my teens, I was really into “Choose your own adventure” books. I would spend hours reading and adventuring especially in the world Joe Denver created in his Lone Wolf series. So don’t let all the tables put you off trying this out.

Off we go

Strider Mode is another beautiful piece to have in your Lord of the Rings collection, especially if you already have the One Ring 2nd edition. Just as with One Ring the layout and artwork are top-notch. The whole thing screams Tolkien. At twenty-seven pages it’s well worth the €5.00. I think they missed a trick with only selling it digitally on PDF, I would have loved a physical copy to go with the complete One Ring box. About The One Ring Roleplaying Game

The One Ring roleplaying game is based on The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, two extraordinary works of fiction by the beloved author and respected academic, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. With these books, Tolkien introduced readers to his greatest creation, the world of Middle-earth, a mythic land from a remote past.

With The One Ring, Middle-earth is yours to explore — you will travel the land searching for clues about the return of the Shadow, and have the chance to play a part in the struggle against the Enemy.

First released in 2011, the game’s award-winning design was hailed as the best attempt at bringing Middle-earth to the gaming table to date. Now the game has entered a new era and brings players further into the Twilight of the Third Age.

The year is 2965 of the Third Age and the Shadow is returning. Rumours of strange things happening outside the borders of civilized lands are spreading. They sometimes reach the ears of individuals who recognize the sinister truth they hide. You are such a hero seeking adventure, eager to seek what was lost or explore what was forgotten.

You are entering the Lone-lands of Eriador. It is here that the One Ring lies, a seed of the past that will one day lead the world to open war against the returning Shadow. The Enemy is moving, and smoke issues once more from Mount Doom, in the land of Mordor.

The One Ring: Strider Mode is a digital release only and available at DriveThruRPG

Since the announcement of the BLADE RUNNER RPG by Free League and Alcon Entertainment back in September, the tabletop roleplaying community has been abuzz with anticipation. When the EN World news site recently held its annual vote for the Most Anticipated RPG of 2022, the BLADE RUNNER RPG claimed the top spot. Now Free League is excited to share that the game is coming to Kickstarter this May, then rolling out to retail this Fall.

The Kickstarter will debut on May 3rd at 6:00 am US Pacific Time (9 am US Eastern, 3 pm Central European). Backers and retailers alike eager to enlist should visit the Kickstarter pre-launch page and sign up to be notified the moment the campaign goes live. All backers who pledge within the first 24 hours will receive a bonus item soon to be revealed.

Reveal the Replicants

Revealed back in September, the BLADE RUNNER RPG propels players into the neon-noir streets of Los Angeles as Blade Runners. Set in the year 2037, the adventures begin shortly after the Wallace Corporation debuts the new Nexus-9 Replicants on Earth, giving players the choice to play as either human or Replicant Blade Runners with different specialities, personalities, and memories.

For a glimpse at the neon neverland to come, Free League has teased new artwork and several spreads from the upcoming Core Rulebook.

Apart from the core casework. The RPG will both in setting and mechanics also showcase key themes of Blade Runner. Sci-fi action, corporate intrigue, existential character drama, and moral conflict. This encourages roleplay and challenge players to question your orders, empathize with their enemies, and make hard calls with high stakes and long-lasting implications.

Free League Publishing and their RPG pedigree

Free League is one of the most funded RPG publishers on Kickstarter. Raising over $9M across 28 successful campaigns including The One Ring, Vaesen, Forbidden Lands, and Tales from the Loop. Tomas Härenstam, Free League co-founder and lead game designer of the ALIEN RPG fills the same role for the BLADE RUNNER RPG.

Original artwork comes from lead ALIEN RPG artist Martin Grip, with Joe LeFavi of Genuine Entertainment. They also brokered the deal with Alcon for Free League. Serving as the lead setting writer, brand manager, and producer on the game series.

The One Ring RPG – Second Edition had two big selling points to me. 1. it is Lord of the Rings, and 2. it was published by Free League Publishing. If you don’t know who Free League Publishing is by now and like tabletop gaming then what rock have you been hiding under?

With amazing, award-winning RPG titles like Forbidden Lands, Alien, Symbaroum, MORK BORK, and my personal favourite, Vaesen, they have been knocking it out of the park as of late. So when I saw that they were going to be involved in the publishing of The One Ring it was a real no-brainer that I needed this in my nerdy life.

Now I am sad to admit that I have not played the first edition as when it was released I was not really into tabletop roleplaying games and even if I was none of my friends were so a lot of these amazing types of games passed me by. I am now older with more like-minded friends so I have been trying my best to rectify this over the last few years and it has been an amazing journey.

Now back to The One Ring RPG. As I have discovered, the lead writer and game designers, Francesco Nepitello and Marco Maggi have returned for the second edition which I think is great for newbies like myself. This is always a good thing in my eyes as it keeps the vision of what the game was meant to be from the start but gives the designers a chance to improve on their work.

Also, this review is all based on the PDF version as I am waiting on the physical copy. So let us dive in and see what this edition has to offer.

We can’t all be the main character

Just like in most TTRPGs, character creation in The One Ring RPG is all about attributes, skills, and virtues. Then you set off on adventures as a member of your very own fellowship. There is the sense that you think of your character as this big hero that will shape Middle-earth but more in line with the teachings of Tolkien that adventurers are just common folk that happen to be born in exceptional times.

They are normal people that do extraordinary things in the stand against evil. In some ways, I think this is better than being the big hero that takes on the big bad at the end. It teaches you that anyone can stand up to any sort of evil or oppression. Something Tolkien himself found out in the first World War. This sets the tone in these adventures, they don’t have to be big world expensing missions, fighting orcs and evil men. They can be just doing small things for your townsfolk or trying to better your loved ones’ lives through small deeds.

Your starting steps into adventure

The first step in creating a character is selecting their culture. The One Ring RPG doesn’t use races and that seems wise because there are different types of “men” here and the foundation for different types of hobbits and dwarves too. There are six options taken right out of the books, Bardlings, Dwarves of Durin’s Folk, Elves of Lindon, Hobbits of the Shire, Men of Bree, and the Rangers of the North.

Each culture has a unique characteristic as well as a special ability called a blessing, that all members of that culture enjoy. The culture you pick also determines your attributes and skills (what they can do and how well they can do it). The three attributes are Strength (physical qualities), Heart (emotional), and Wits (Mental). If you have played any type of TTRPG you will be familiar and this won’t be new or groundbreaking.

You will also have to pick a Calling which is The One Ring’s version of a character class. The Callings, shape the skills and roles of the characters and can be combined with your culture. Each Calling also has something called a Shadow Path. It shows what happens if your character becomes overly influenced by the Shadow (Sauron). If this happens your Calling will begin to twist and become something darker. The Shadow Path feels just right for a Tolkein game and makes the players think a bit more carefully when doing actions as anything can lead you down the wrong path even if you think you are doing good.

Fight for the good of Middle Earth

There are special dice to go with The One Ring. All you really need are d6s and d12s. On the d6, the 6’s have an Elvish rune for additional success. On the d12, the 11 is swapped out for the Eye of Sauron and 12 for the Gandalf Rune. However, you roll a combination of d12 and d6 dice, or “Feat” and “Success” dice.

When your character needs to achieve something, you’ll generally roll a single Feat die. You then add a number of Success dice equal to your character’s rank with the relevant ability. You add up the results and compare that to a predetermined “Target Number” (TN) to see if they’re successful or not. The TN isn’t defined by the Loremaster, but rather, by your character’s own attributes. Each of the three core attributes — Strength, Heart, and Wits — has a TN that’s equal to 20 minus the attribute’s score. If you are familiar with the Year Zero system then you’ll have an idea of what is going on. If not you can find them here.

I found learning about the combat and action rules not overly difficult. They did have their moments of “Hang on, let me just read that again”. Thankfully as I have used the Year Zero System in Vaesen this seemed to be a similar system.

Middle-earth never looked so good

One thing that struck me when going through the core book and accompanied extras was the artwork. It was spectacular from cover to cover and even if I never get to play the game I am glad that it is part of my collection. To me, it feels like a mix of Alan Lee’s iconic Tolkien work and bizarrely the old Lord of the Rings animated film from 1978. It just feels Tolkien and hats off to Alvaro Tapia and all the other artists that worked on the books.

If you are a fan of Tolkien’s works, The One Ring RPG is a must-have and that goes for just collectors of his work as well. The game bridges the events between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and it is your chance to be part of that world and adventure. If you are one of the lucky ones that pre-ordered The One Ring you will be in for a treat with all the bonus materials you receive. Maps, pre-generated character sheets (I won’t spoil the surprise), Loremasters screen, cards, and adventures, it really is an amazing collection. So get out of your hobbit hole and start your adventures now.

Do you dare to leave the Mythic North and set sail for mist-shrouded isles? Free League today announced a crowdfunding campaign for Vaesen RPG: Mythic Britain & Ireland set to launch on Kickstarter on December 7th.

Face the mythic creatures of Britain and Ireland in the upcoming expansion to the multiple award-winning Vaesen – Nordic Horror Roleplaying. The brand new setting invites you to experience gothic horror mysteries in the lands of Mary Shelley, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Bram Stoker.

Written by industry legend and ENNIE-winner Graeme Davis (The Enemy Within) and beautifully illustrated by ENNIE-winning artist Johan Egerkrans. More in-depth information for the Mythic Britain & Ireland expansion will be revealed at the launch of the Kickstarter. Join the Society and discover the horrible truth behind the old tales. Sign up at the pre-launch page to be notified as soon as the Kickstarter goes live!

As a Vaesen player and Irish Myth fan myself, I cannot wait to see what they come up with in this expansion. Both Ireland and Britain have a huge catalogue of creatures and stories to draw from. It will be exciting to see which ones they chose from and if they will be the same as the ones I was going to pick.
