Arabian Nights no more

Coriolis: The Great Dark is more than just a sequel to The Third Horizon. It expands the universe and drags the story away from the Middle East-influenced Science Fiction of the last books. The setting I thing is much cooler (pun intended). Coriolis: The Great Dark is set far beyond the last iteration of the game. Colony ships have fled the growing war and have followed a faint signal that many think could be the Nadir, sister ship to the Zenith.

As the signal dies the colonists are stranded in a dead system they call Jumuah. To make things worse the portal that should lead them out is dead. The colonists established a single city on an asteroid called, and I shit you not “‘The Ship City of Coriolis the Eternal and Jumuah the First and Last”. I know right but thankfully it gets shortened to City Ship. In true Coriolis style, they decide to send expeditions into the depts. Where they fight Alien ruins and a disease called the Blight.

A new System for a new system

To push home that Coriolis: The Great Dark is an updated version they have modified the previous rule system that flies more closely to the Year Zero Engine (YZE). This is a welcomed change as if you have played any Free League games you will be very familiar with how easy it is to use. Most changes are small like six attributes rather than the usual four, talents instead of skills.

The two big ones for me are no more Darkness Point mechanics. This is replaced with Hope because there is nothing worse than the loss of all Hope. The other is the new Delve mechanic. The group will make Delves into the ruins to retrieve artifacts. With each Delve the group will have to bring significant supplies, oxygen canisters, food, water, batteries, etc… or else they won’t be coming back. Each one has a difficulty rating (0-3) and markers that show what each character needs supply-wise to make it back. Plans will go out the window as unexpected monsters, blight, and sneaky NPC will ruin your day.

Beauty in the darkness

As usual, the book itself looks amazing. The artwork though different than The Third Horizon is still beautiful. It’s dark and lonely and for some reason has a feel of Event Horizon to me in contrast to the warmth of the last books.

In the pack you get Coriolis: The Great Dark, a quickstart book but you also get four pre-generated character sheets. These are for The Algebraist Apprentice with Bird, The Wreck Diver, The Guild Soldier, and The Vacuum Welder.

If you play Coriolis then you will get The Great Dark and if you don’t and want to start from the start then you better hurry up as Free League is discontinuing the printing of The Third Horizon. I would recommend this game especially if space exploration is your bag.

In the game, the player characters must not only hone their physical skills, but deeply explore who they truly are – what drives them to go on, what they consider worth fighting for, and what they’re capable of doing, in the best and worst of times.

The crowdfunding campaign has unlocked a long list of stretch goals, including: solo mode, threat meter, Atlanta Area Map, custom dice, bonus archetypes, adventure maps, Foundry and Roll20 Virtual Tabletop Modules and pre-generated characters from The Walking Dead TV series, with more stretch goals on the way.

All backers will get early access to PDF versions months ahead of the official release.

In The Walking Dead Universe Roleplaying Game, you will play as people struggling to survive in a hostile world. Exceptional challenges can appear from anywhere – from the lack of essential supplies, from conflicts brewing within the group, from hidden construction flaws in your safe haven, or from approaching walkers hungering for your flesh.

There are two ways to play the game:

• In Campaign Mode, it is your goals and choices, and the result of your group efforts, that create the storyline.
• In Survival Mode, you are faced with a dangerous situation that needs to be handled immediately. Survival Mode scenarios often feature locations and characters from the TV series.

The first Sword of the Necromancer also had a successful crowdfunding campaign. It raised €201,256 from its initial €15,000 goal. Revenant’s campaign will have an initial goal to fund the game’s physical edition. There will be additional stretch goals to add more features to the game. Sword of the Necromancer: Revenant has been announced for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series.

The game looks charming, with an engaging combat system and some stellar voice acting. I was impressed by how far they’ve come. I’m hoping that the game will continue to grow and evolve into something truly memorable.

Reveal the Replicants

Revealed back in September, the BLADE RUNNER RPG propels players into the neon-noir streets of Los Angeles as Blade Runners. Set in the year 2037, the adventures begin shortly after the Wallace Corporation debuts the new Nexus-9 Replicants on Earth, giving players the choice to play as either human or Replicant Blade Runners with different specialities, personalities, and memories.

For a glimpse at the neon neverland to come, Free League has teased new artwork and several spreads from the upcoming Core Rulebook.

Apart from the core casework. The RPG will both in setting and mechanics also showcase key themes of Blade Runner. Sci-fi action, corporate intrigue, existential character drama, and moral conflict. This encourages roleplay and challenge players to question your orders, empathize with their enemies, and make hard calls with high stakes and long-lasting implications.

Free League Publishing and their RPG pedigree

Free League is one of the most funded RPG publishers on Kickstarter. Raising over $9M across 28 successful campaigns including The One Ring, Vaesen, Forbidden Lands, and Tales from the Loop. Tomas Härenstam, Free League co-founder and lead game designer of the ALIEN RPG fills the same role for the BLADE RUNNER RPG.

Original artwork comes from lead ALIEN RPG artist Martin Grip, with Joe LeFavi of Genuine Entertainment. They also brokered the deal with Alcon for Free League. Serving as the lead setting writer, brand manager, and producer on the game series.

The aim of this particular operation

The aim of this Kickstarter campaign is to support the adaptation of Operation Highjump: The Fall of Berlin. This includes the transition from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC. As well as that it will expand on the in-game content to offer an even greater gameplay experience.

As well as the continued development of the game, the Kickstarter campaign will look to create a community of like-minded gamers. This will help to support the game at launch. There will also be limited and exclusive rewards for backers to enjoy at launch.

Dead by Daylight: the Board Game will be available in two varieties. First, there is the standard edition. Which is priced at $49.99 USD and includes 6 Killers, 7 Survivors, and 2 maps. Then there is the collector’s edition. This is priced at $99.99 USD and includes a lot more. 16 Killers, 17 Survivors, and 4 maps, upgraded components, and additional hook and generator miniatures to complement the game’s ambiance. The collector’s edition will have limited availability post-Kickstarter and will not be available in stores.

Between 3 and 5 players will take on the roles of the resourceful Survivors or the relentless Killer. Then they’ll traverse the board to either survive and escape or hunt down their quarry. Players will be able to use special items, perks, powers, and props scattered throughout the Trial Grounds.

Having only just recently played the source material I’m interested in seeing how this tabletop iteration shakes out.

CY_BORG RPG is a messed-up mirror image of MÖRK BORG RPG. Similar in tone and approach to game and book design but enhanced and augmented. Includes an introductory scenario and 60 random tables for every cyberpunk need. The game is written by Christian Sahlén, a veteran of the Swedish OSR scene, with art and graphic design by Johan Nohr (MÖRK BORG RPG). Like MÖRK BORG, the game will be printed and distributed by Free League Publishing (ALIEN RPG, Tales from the Loop RPG, The One Ring RPG) under the Free League Workshop sub-label for independently designed games.

The game casts the players as cybernetic punks and misfits raging against a relentless corporate system, corrupt police forces, bloodthirsty street gangs, and alien/nano-worshipping cults. The setting is the dystopian metropolis Cy, the only city that matters. Besides an introductory scenario, the 160-page core book is packed with tables to generate near-endless play; including missions, NPCs, locations, corporations, and cults.

The game uses an updated version of the original MÖRK BORG rules, keeping the featherlight openness and simplicity while adding elements like autofire, cybertech, and hacking. The six optional classes include the Shunned Nanomancer, the Burned Hacker, and the Renegade Cyberslasher. Since its release in 2020, MÖRK BORG has fostered a vibrant, creative, and productive community, and so far there are almost a thousand titles released for the game under its third-party license. All these are—with little effort—compatible with CY_BORG. Just give it a cyberpunk twist.

Similar to the apocalyptic prophecies in MÖRK BORG, a campaign-defining countdown mechanic will dramatically affect and shape the game world regardless of the players’ actions. In CY_BORG, this comes in the shape of Miserable Headlines; catastrophes, and events reported by the corp-owned news feed with varying regularity until the cataclysmic conclusion seven headlines in. Nothing is ever static. The city is a living—or rather, dying—place.
