Go-Go Town! is an unholy mishmash of games that manages to be chaotic, charming, unhinged and compelling all in one. It’s colourful. So, so silly. And it’s fun!

Imagine, if you will, someone taking Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, and the Mii Parade from the Wii and shoving them in a food blender. Spray the whole thing with brightly coloured paint and add a big dollop of goofy. Now you’ve got Go-Go Town!

The game starts with you, the player character, being flung from a moving vehicle in a duffle bag. After that, one of what seems to be the Men in Black tells you that you’re the new mayor of a half-block of podunk nowhere. He and his cohort of identical Agent Smith lookalikes teach you the basics of running a town, then get the hell out of dodge. You’re the mayor now! Congrats!

What’s a mayor gotta do?

As the player, your job (if you choose to accept it) is simple: grow the town, and make money. That’s about it. At first, you have to gather and process the materials yourself (classic mine rocks-smelt rocks, chop wood-saw wood stuff). You build houses for your residents, businesses for them to work in, and provide the raw materials for their jobs. At first, it’s simple materials, like rocks to make pet rocks (nope – not joking). As the game progresses, however, more lucrative jobs need more complex materials, processed multiple times.

Also, because you’re the mayor, you get to cut a cute little red ribbon for every new building. It’s the little things, isn’t it?

As your town grows, you can get the residents to start doing the grunt work like, for instance, gathering and processing materials. You can hire a courier to ferry materials around, a bin man to collect the rubbish, etc. etc. Who’d have thought? A town where the mayor doesn’t have to empty the bins! Will wonders never cease?

Who’s buying this stuff, you may ask? Firstly, it’s Townies. These are the residents of Go-Go Town! My first Towny, for example, was called Baldo. He was bald. He wouldn’t join my town until I hit 15 people with my car (again – nope, not kidding). Go figure. Secondly, there are the Tourists. These are mainly – and I wish I was kidding – ghosts and werewolves. They pretty much just wander around buying things and gawking at the sights. This generates Ego, which brings us nicely to…

Tech Progression in Go-Go Town!

Ego is the “research” currency in the game. Mainly, it allows you to unlock new structures, recipies and so on. Because each unlock provides a limited number of buildings, you’re gonna want to spend Ego often. Because Go-To Town!‘s progression is in set tiers, each new unlock brings you closer to advancing the whole town. Neat!

Speaking of which, once you reach specific milestones, you unlock Challenges! These, funnily enough, challenge you to hit certain goals (mostly, make x amount of money in y amount of time) and then you level up the town. Radical.

All this combined makes for super addictive gameplay. Because the systems are so complex but intuitive, you find yourself saying things like “If I just gather more octopuses to turn into sausages (somehow), I’ll get enough money to impress all these ghosts into making my town bigger”. Wow, it really is bizarre when you lay it all out like that. However – super fun.

Early access: should you get involved?

Go-Go Town! go-goes into early access on June 18th. We’ve all been burned by early-access games in the past. So, should you get it?

Long story short, yes. If you like cozy resource management games, you’ll like this. Moreover, if you like goofy bizarro weirdness fever dreams, you’ll like this.

Long story long, here’s some pros and cons:

Pros:

++ Compelling gameplay loop

++ Goofy & charming humour

++ Visually and musically lovely

++ Huge amount of content to sink your teeth into

Cons:

— The progression is pretty linear, so replayability isn’t great. As a result you can’t specialise your town, and you’ll always progress through the tiers in pretty much the same way

— Resource gathering is tedious and your Townies are very, very slow at doing it for you

Overall, I’d recommend it. If in doubt, there’s a demo out right now on Steam and you can try it out for yourself!

The Planet Zoo: Oceania Pack has landed – that’s right, folks. It’s that time again. The 15th downloadable content pack for Planet Zoo, the Oceania Pack is live!

At this point, Frontier Development has established a pretty regular cadence with their DLCs. Some – like the Oceania Pack – focus equally on new animals & new building pieces. Others, like the Arid Animal Pack, are much more creature-centric. That said, while the new Polynesian-themed building pieces in this DLC are great, I would absolutely say that the new animal additions are far and away the stars of this experience.

Continuing another pattern, Frontier has also released a brand spanking new (and free!) content update, 1.15, alongside the new pack. As always, continue (or skip) to the end of the review to get our take on this.

Tiki-tastic Polynesian Pacific Props

The Oceania Pack adds yet another strong, classic “theme-park” style theme to Planet Zoo. Yet another kind of thatched roof (the first two being the South American and African styles). Fake glowing lava – very cool (not literally). Finally, it adds some neat “Tiki” themed props & decorations for that classic Polynesian feel.

Overall, a really nice addition to the building options. However, if you already have the South America pack, I will say that these additions feel quite same-y.

Cute, Cuddly, Classic! Animals of the Planet Zoo: Oceania Pack

As previously mentioned, despite not being an “Animal Pack” in the traditional Planet Zoo sense, the new animals really are the stars of this show. Every new entry is really gorgeous and, frankly, adorable. The new animals are:

  • Kiwi
  • Tasmanian devil
  • Little Penguin
  • Quokka
  • Spectacled flying fox (this one is a walkthrough habitat animal!)

Frankly, unlike some of the previous packs, there’s not a dud among these. I particularly adore the Quokka and its utterly adorable grin. The animals are all brilliant, they fit in with the new plants & building pieces beautifully, and they fill out the catalogue of creatures admirably. Slam dunk from an animal perspective!

New Career Challenge: Goodwin Family Wildlife Park

Any avid GamEir readers who may have read my previous Planet Zoo pack reviews knows that I am sick and tired of scenarios involving Tiffany Summers, the clueless socialite. No shade on Tiffany – it’s just that a bit of variety would be nice!

Well, we’re in luck with this pack – Emma Goodwin makes her return in the “Goodwin Family Wildlife Park”. The challenge itself is nothing to write home about – not too easy not too hard. What it does bring, however, is yet another gorgeous canvas on which the player can build their dream zoo. A tropical Pacific island, covered in traditional buildings made of natural materials. In classic Frontier fashion, this map shows off the newly built pieces and plants introduced in the pack, hopefully inspiring the player to make use of them themselves.

Overall – fine career challenge, an excellent map!

The Planet Zoo: Oceania Pack – Delightful or dud?

At this point in Planet Zoo‘s development, the DLCs are falling into an unfortunately predictable pattern. Released regularly, each new DLC adds some excellent new content that stands alone. Frontier can’t assume that any given player owns any of the previous DLCs. As such, every one of them pretty much brings exactly the same new experience to the zookeeper fanbase.

There’s nothing wrong with that at all, of course. However, what this means is that my recommendation for this pack is the same as many of the previous ones. That is: if you’re dying to use either the animals or the new Oceania-themed build items in your zoo, go ahead and pick this up. If nothing jumps out at you, you’re not missing anything special.

Finally – the 1.15 Update!

Normally, Frontier add 3-4 very minor changes with each update. This time, however, they’re bringing something very special: viewing domes!

I can’t imagine any zoo I build from now on won’t include this. The ability to get your guests up close and personal with the animals without the hassle (and danger!) of a walkthrough habitat can’t be understated. I can’t wait to see what all the creative Planet Zoo players do with this brilliant new feature.

There are a few extra bits added along with these new domes, but nothing too exciting – check out the excellent summary here on the Planet Zoo Wiki.

A few excellent new animals - not for everyone, but a solid entry.

The Planet Zoo: Arid Animal Pack is the latest in a long line of DLC for Planet Zoo. It is the 14th content pack DLC for the game, bringing the grand total amount you’d need to spend to have every DLC to just shy of €200. Now that’s an investment!

That said, we here at GamEir love Planet Zoo and have had the privilege of reviewing the gamut of DLCs as they came out. So, does the Planet Zoo: Arid Animal Pack hold up against the rest?

Short answer: yes, to an extent. Long answer: it’s a good addition, but is perhaps a little uninspiring. Longer answer: see the rest of the review!

By hoof, by claw and by spine! The Animals of the Planet Zoo: Arid Animal Pack

Let’s get down to business (to defeat the Huns). This is an animal pack, for a game in which you build habitats to hold animals. And people pay to come see those animals. So, how are they? How are the animals?!

They’re… Pretty good. The new furry & scale friends in this DLC are as follows:

  • Dromedary camel
  • African crested porcupine
  • Addax
  • Somali wild ass
  • Black rhino
  • Sand cat
  • Dama gazelle
  • Desert horned viper

As usual, each and every one of these animals is lovingly rendered and animated. If there’s one thing you can count on Frontier Developments to do, it is design and realise utterly breathtaking animals for Planet Zoo. As usual, there’s only one word for the animal stars of this DLC: flawless!

There are a few stand-out critters in this line-up. Obviously, the Dromedary Camel is a strong entry. A classic zoo animal, popular, spectacular, and a star from back in the Zoo Tycoon days. The African Crested Porcupine is a delight, especially in motion. Watching their spines wobble to and fro as they paces their habitat is so fun. Normally, habitat animals (ie, the animals that can only live in a Dublin apartment-sized box) are fairly uninspiring – however, the Desert Horned Viper is adorable! It hides in the sandy rocks of its habitat with its little spiky nose sticking out. Definitely will be a staple for my zoos moving forward.

Finally, the Sand Cat. I love cats. I shamelessly adore cats in all their forms. The Sand Cat? Out of this world cute. Can’t get over it. 11/10. Give me more sand cats.

In summary: yes, this is another home run where the execution of the animals is concerned!

But is it worth the tenner?

All that said, taken in the context of the rest of the game and its packs, the Planet Zoo: Arid Animal Pack is a little lacklustre. This DLC focuses heavily on hoofed animals and on animals from Africa. Both of these animal groups are extremely heavily represented in Planet Zoo already. So, even though each animal is wonderfully done, none of them really made me go “wow!”.

Furthermore, this pack adds yet another Career scenario starring the socialite Tiffany Summers. Why, Frontier?! We’ve had so many Tiffany missions already. You clearly gave up on voicing the scenarios several DLCs ago – why not give us another character, even a new one?

Speaking of the new scenario – it’s set in a gorgeous Saudi Arabian ruin, but the mission goals are very bog standard. Nothing really standout here – build a zoo, do it well, you’ll pass the scenario. Yawn.

Overall – the Planet Zoo: Arid Animal Pack is excellent where the animals themselves are concerns. But the pack taken as a whole, and in the context of what we’ve seen so far… Not incredible. A must-buy if you dearly love any of the animals, but you won’t miss it otherwise.

Finally: the 1.14 update!

As always, Frontier has released an excellent free content update alongside the DLC. This update focuses on letting players explore their creativity and expression, by adding:

  • Staff Flexi colour – players can customise their staff’s uniforms for greater than ever fashion statements
  • Spitting – numerous animals can now spit and your guests (amazing, no notes)
  • Scenic camera mode & cinematic route editor – new tools to help players get the perfect shot of their zoo to post on the internet for sweet internet points

All brilliant additions! Especially the spitting. Hilarious. You’ve done it again, Frontier.

Have you always fantasised about becoming the manager of a successful Japanese girl band? Well, if that is the case, I first recommend you take a long hard look at yourself, and then afterwards, give Idol Manager a try.

Glitchpitch’s management simulation game, Idol Manager tasks the player to look after every aspect of their manufactured pop band’s career. From the hiring process, the scouting, the hiring of choreographers, rental of recording studios, picking the right tracks and lyrics, studying the trends of what is “in” and what is “out” and managing the temperaments and personal lives of your budding stars, the game is ridiculously in-depth. Sometimes overwhelmingly so.

If you have no experience with this type of game, it can be very daunting. There is a lot to look after and a lot to manage. Even for those who are well-versed in this genre, it still takes a bit of getting used to, but it does become quite immersive.

You won’t be (pop) idle!

As you would expect, when you begin your career, money is tight, and you will be restricted in terms of what you can afford. This means that you will not be able to hire the best producers or the best coaches. Some other aspects will be locked or unaffordable until your band starts to make a name for themselves. This means that you need to be ruthless when it comes to hiring and firing staff.

Picking the right band members is also vital for success. Each girl has a unique set of skills, abilities, and personality traits. During the audition process, you need to ensure you pick the girls who will be able to co-exist in the industry. This, however, is where the first of the game’s many red flags make an appearance. In this day and age, deciding to pick a girl based on their “Sexiness” rating is problematic at best. That issue is exponentially increased when the band member is as young as 14!

The problems do not end there. You can micromanage the girls’ personal lives to an uncomfortable degree. Your girls can get involved with married politicians or celebrities which will increase exposure (negatively or positively). Speaking of exposure, you can choose that your starlets wear shorts underneath their skimpy outfits to avoid wardrobe malfunctions. Worryingly, you can also choose that they do not. You can also choose how…” friendly” you become with your band members.

There are undeniably grim and unsettling storylines that it is possible to get embroiled in, and should you choose to, the game will get very seedy. But these are all down to the choices that you make. It is possible to make more wholesome choices and avoid all the questionable content.

The game looks ace! (Attorney)

The graphics are mostly just overlays of Japanese-style pictures and the dialogue is all done with text on the screen, with intermittent exclamations of joy or dissatisfaction. If you ever played an Ace Attorney game, you will know what I am talking about.

As a simulation game goes, it can be very addictive. There is a real weight behind the choices you make and the outcomes which result. It is possible to pump an ungodly number of hours into the game. If you want to be hands-on and focus on every single aspect of the band’s career, you will never be short of something to do.

Balancing the needs of the band members against the financial needs of the company can be challenging. Do you want to give the girls a break in the health spa, or do you need them to rehearse? Should you give an upset band member a day off and risk the others claiming favouritism? Do you want the girls to have a seductive dance routine to entice male fans or will that alienate the female fan base?

There is a handy tutorial available which will hold your hand for the first part of the game, getting you used to the mechanics. This is a godsend to the uninitiated. In short, this is a very capable and engaging simulation game. The subject matter and objectification of young women/girls will undoubtedly raise a few eyebrows, but if you make the right choices, you can avoid it

It is a solid if unusual, game which may be a little too intricate for inexperienced players. However, Idol Manager is perfect for fans of the genre.

DEADCRAFT is a new simulation ARPG. Here players must craft to survive in a treacherous world ravaged by zombies. The game is scheduled to launch on Windows PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch on the 19th of May.

DEADCRAFT will be available for purchase for £19.99/€24.99 for the standard edition and £29.99/€39.99 for the Digital Deluxe edition. The Digital Delux Edition will include several pieces of DLC content that will be available post-launch.

So you’re a half-human/half-zombie hybrid

As if a hail of meteors reducing the earth to a barren wasteland wasn’t bad enough, the devastation released a mysterious virus that resurrected the dead. Ravaged by fire from the sky and the dead below, only a fraction of the human population remains. They are largely clustered into small outposts where power-hungry opportunists capitalize on the chaos. A rare survivor of exposure to the virus, part-zombie Reid (this is you) is captured by the twisted Nebron, leader of the Ark. After escaping from the torture table into the surrounding wasteland, Reid is determined to return to the city and exact some apocalyptic justice.

Stare in wild wonder as the half-human, half-zombie protagonist Reid. He will slice through foes on a quest for righteous vengeance! Wield his inhuman zombie powers to fend off enemies while searching the wasteland for answers to what happened to the only man he could trust. Build fantastical new armaments, conjure curious concoctions, or even grow and harvest zombie soldiers. These monstrous beings will stand by Reid’s side against whatever the apocalypse throws at him. It’s a dangerous world, and in order to stay alive, Reid must take advantage of the dead!

Key Features of DEADCRAFT

  • Farm the Dead to Stay Alive ‒ Plant fresh corpses (or just a combination of limbs) into the ground and give them a little TLC. They will then sprout into an undead army of infantry, sentries, and more!
  • Creeptastic Crafting ‒ Surviving the apocalypse sometimes means using whatever scraps one can find. Other times it means enlisting a loyal undead to assist you. This includes building and running an entire factory of grotesque machinery. What does this do? Why you’ll be churning out an unholy amalgamation of survival items.
  • Death-Defying Powers of the Undead ‒ Reid’s zombie side gives him a powerful advantage in a fight. It allows him to shield himself from danger or swat enemies away like annoying gnats. However as each devoured enemy pushes him closer to his zombie side, he’ll have to take care to maintain what little humanity he has left.
  • Become a Savior…or a Scourge ‒ Help out other survivors to learn new recipes or abilities. But if Reid’s hard up for money or supplies, shake down a local and take it off them…as long as he doesn’t mind potentially becoming a wanted man.

In the board game arena, there are few games more iconic than Monopoly. We’ve all flipped a table or two in our time at a lost game. Well, Monopoly Tycoon aims to bring that experience to the palm of your hand!

Monopoly Tycoon is a free-to-play city-building game for Android and iOS. Far from the family ending their relationships around the dinner table, this game seems to take the franchise in a new direction. A single-player experience, Monopoly Tycoon features 3 maps (Atlantic City, Paris and London). The player, armed with their start-up capital, must wisely invest and grow their wealth. Rather than the more static development available in other editions of Monopoly, in this game, players can freely build hundreds of different, unique buildings and decorations. It seems the game will feel quite different from the board game adaptation, because you can place buildings freely throughout the city. So, if you like city-builders like SimCity or City Mania, this might just scratch that itch for you.

This isn’t the development team’s first adaptation of a popular franchise to mobile. For instance, Nvizzio Creations launched RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch in 2017, and reviews of that title are excellent. Also, way back in 2001, they launched the original Monopoly Tycoon. All that said, it seems like this project is in good hands.

Key Features of Monopoly Tycoon

Straight from the horse’s mouth, here’s what the developers claim Monopoly Tycoon will feature at launch;

  • Discover over a thousand buildings and decorations to collect, build and upgrade
  • Compete to acquire properties in the Auction House
  • Fulfill the needs from your houses and hotels to maximize rents
  • Complete missions to progress and get rewards
  • Draw Community Chest and Chance cards to boost your performance
  • Pass Go everyday to increase daily rewards
  • Resolve City Problems, by playing fun mini-games
  • Unlock three famous MONOPOLY board locations: Atlantic City, Paris and London.
  • Become the wealthiest real estate tycoon ever!

Additionally, Nvizzio are working closely with Hasbro – the game board giant who owns the original tabletop game. That lends credibility to the game but, above all, we’re hoping it means this title will feel like a proper adaptation, not just a city-builder with the Monopoly branding slapped on.

All in all, we at GamEir can’t wait to get stuck in and see how it feels. Players can download the game for free via iOS and Android, and follow the latest news for MONOPOLY TYCOON via TwitterFacebookYouTube and Instagram!

Hell Architect is one of those games I wish I could enjoy. On paper, it sounds great – you play as a demon, tasked with designing one of the circles of Hell. Your job is to torture sinners and extract as much suffering from them as humanly (demonically?) possible. By carefully examining each sinner for their weaknesses and vices, you are expected to cunningly orchestrate the ultimate torture for them.

I came into it expected something along the lines of Dungeon Keeper or Evil Genius. Unfortunately, what I got fell far short of either of those.

Torturing, 9 to 5

Hell Architect asks: what if the afterlife was run like an office? What if the demons wore ties, carried clipboards, and had overbearing, annoying supervisors? What if Lilith, Primordial She-Demon, was the fussy head of Hell’s HR department?

There’s nothing wrong with any of that. Nothing, of course, except that the idea has been done to death. The premise is so overdone that TV Tropes has not one, but two entries for it. At this point, depictions of the afterlife that aren’t run like a beige-carpeted tech consultancy firm are refreshing. Plenty of video games have grappled with the idea – from Grim Fandango to 1996’s Afterlife to the rogue-like Hades. What does Hell Architect do better than any of those entries?

The sad answer to that is – very little if anything.

The Sights & Sounds of Hell Architect

Neither the art nor sound design of Hell Architect is anything to write home about. The overwhelming colour scheme is a drab brown – unsurprising, considering the game is set deep underground. The 2D sprites are cartoonish but largely forgettable. The human sinners are pretty much indistinguishable from one another, while the other demons are all the same stereotypical red-skinned, horned variety. Albeit with reading glasses and clip-on ties.

Similarly, the sound design is fairly forgettable. The music is unremarkable. The sound effects, individually, are okay – but later on in the game, when upwards of 30 of them may be playing at once, the nuance is lost. Each torture device, every piece of processing equipment, has its own sound effect – a sound effect that plays every time the item is activated – so once you’re up and running, the noise is chaotic, irritating, and never-ending. Maybe Woodland Games is, from a sense of twisted irony, trying to torture their players? Regardless, I couldn’t stand it for too long – after a few hours, I simply had to turn the sound off.

On a related note, the voice acting is simply woeful. Each new character, as they’re introduced, gives the impression that they’re trying to outdo the last when it comes to nasal, irritating voices.

Iron Maidens, White-Hot Furnaces and… Coffee carts?

The core gameplay loop of Hell Architect couldn’t be simpler. The main currency of the game is Suffering. You get Suffering from torturing sinners – a little bit more if the method of torture lines up with their fears. Suffering is spent on upgrading buildings – crucial for making your setup more efficient. Essence is another currency – you get it from executing the sinners. Yes, you can kill them (again?). No, they’re not gone forever; you can get them back later. Essence, along with Suffering, is needed for more advanced buildings and upgrades. Everything you do in Hell Architect is geared towards getting more Suffering and Essence. That’s about it.

Weirdly, your sinners all have needs (like Sims. Sim Sinners? Simmers?) that must be met. These include Hunger & Thirst, Rest, and the need to use the toilet. If a sinner goes without one of them for too long, they die. That is to say, they disappear from your circle of Hell and go to Limbo. As before, you can get them all back with the Limbo Gong, and advanced building.

I have to say, the whole premise of meeting the physical needs of souls is a bit bewildering to me. Like, why does dearly departed Steve need to eat and pee? Moreover, why does the game encourage me to provide luxury for the sinners I’m supposed to be torturing? Late-game buildings allow you to provide things like steak dinners and fresh-brewed coffee. Mechanically, you absolutely want to do this – it’s much more efficient than early-game slop & recycled excrement (yes, ew, I know). But thematically, it makes no sense. To me, the whole system smacks of Woodland Games running a little short on creativity. Every other game of the genre has upgrades, and the upgrades mean more luxury – so this does too.

Torture & Torment Have Never Been So… Easy

My final, and probably most damning criticism of Hell Architect is this; it’s too easy. Once you get the basics set up, it’s just a matter of keeping it scaled to the number of sinners you have. That’s… About it. There are 7 scenarios to complete, each a little harder than the last, but not noticeably so. The driving narrative behind the scenarios isn’t terribly interesting, either. All this combines for a game which, frankly, isn’t terribly entertaining to play. I wouldn’t go so far as to say Hell Architect is boring, but it’s not far off. Once I got through the scenarios, I had very little motivation to try the game’s Sandbox mode.

All in all, Hell Architect feels uninspired. The premise isn’t terribly original, the story and characters are forgettable (as are the art & sound design), and the gameplay is lacklustre. Even if, like me, you’re a fan of simulation/management games, there’s not enough here to keep you engaged. The price tag (€22.99 at the time of this review) is well above what the game is worth.

My recommendation – get it on sale, or not at all. I don’t see it improving much – all of these problems are fundamental to the game’s design, not anything I see being remediated by patches in the future.

Hexagon Games has announced the survival city-builder Sphere – Flying Cities is launching in Early Access on Steam next month on the 14th of October. The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic future and sees players manage the well-being of the Earth’s very first flying city.

The city is inhabited by the planet’s last remaining humans. Utilizing a mix of strategy, simulation, and survival elements, Sphere ensures there’s no limit to the truly extraordinary and immersive gameplay scenarios that can be constructed.

The trailer (that you can check out below) focuses on the importance of your Sphere and how your skills are paramount to the survival of mankind.

Key Features of Sphere – Flying Cities:

  • Build It and They Will Come: Erect a living, thriving city with over 30 different building types and maintain your ecosystem via resource management mastery and infrastructure supported by independent economic cycles
  • Don’t Look Down: Ensure your anti-gravity device and its expanding deflector shield are kept in tip-top shape at all times, as an insufficient power supply will result in a quick (and painful) demise
  • Send in the Robots: Utilize drones and other scout technologies in hazardous environments to quickly construct buildings, harvest resources, and search for stranded survivors. You may even find rare materials in uncharted territories!
  • A Geologist in Space: Research new technologies to improve the efficiency of every aspect of your city and withstand a plethora of (un)natural disasters like geomagnetic storms, asteroids, and poisonous clouds
  • A Delicate Ecosystem: The well-being of your people is crucial to the success of the mission. Carefully tend to the needs of your colonists by supplying food, healthcare, and shelter. But don’t forget, the survival of many may require the deaths of the few —  sacrifices are an inevitable imperative.

Trying to keep a civilisation alive has never been so much fun. I wouldn’t know myself, I’m not a big fan of this genre but I have to say, the design and world of Sphere – Flying Cities is intriguing.

Fans of the survival sim/strategy genre are likely already familiar with The Bonfire: Forsaken Lands. Starting out life as a mobile-only game, it has since come to Steam & the Nintendo Switch. It has won numerous awards since it first dropped back in 2018 – and even sparked a sequel! Generally speaking, I think it’s fair to say this game has a fairly good track record already.

For gamers on Xbox, some time in Q4 of this year (2021) will give them the chance to join in on the fun. On top of the existing gameplay features from other platforms, this release will see the addition of achievements and leaderboards. Ahh, I can hear that “ba-DOOP” achievement sound already.

What is The Bonfire: Forsaken Lands anyway?

I’m so glad you asked, dear reader.

Bonfire is, at its heart, a settlement-builder. It’s in 2D – if you’ve played Kingdom: New Lands, it has a similar sort of vibe. Starting from a humble bonfire (see what they did there?), you expand your town, recruit new settlers, and keep them safe from things that go bump in the night. The aesthetics are super clean. The gameplay, while simple to learn, has a lot of nuance to it; definitely worth playing more than once to experiment. It’s not life-changing, by any means, but it’s a great way to relax and switch off for a few hours.

So, come Q4 of 2021, that’s exactly what Xbox owners will be able to do!

A description from the developers themselves here;

The Bonfire: Forsaken Lands encourages players to take caution but also explore a diverse fantasy world in order to unlock all of the secrets hidden underneath the snow. Unlock advanced building and crafting options including the ability to trade with new civilizations and more! Will you uncover the secrets of the land or die trying? Each choice and each strategy employed could mean safety or destruction in this survival simulation roleplaying game!

Pretty much spot-on, I’d say!

If you’re not an Xbox owner, or just don’t want to wait, you can pick up The Bonfire: Forsaken Lands from Steam, Google Play or the App Store. Also coming soon to Switch!
