Once I rose above the noise and confusion of my first steps at Gamescom 2019, I got the confidence to just go up to developers and ask to see games. Devolver Digital were kind enough to give me full hands on with their new IP Carrion.

Carrion, my wayward son

Just to get a glimpse beyond the illusion of just looking at trailers online, all I had to do is ask. So one of the developers sat me down in front of a screen, gave me a gamepad and give it a go. At first it was a bit odd and felt uncontrollable. If you have every played a Metroidvania, you normally move left to right and can jump. Carrion gives you so much more freedom right from the get go. After wrapping my head around this concept, I was soaring ever higher, but I flew too high. The first enemy with a gun killed me.

Carrion, you will always remember

Even though my eyes could see, I still was a blind man. This summarises the first part of my hands on experience. Though my mind could think, I still was a mad man. This is the overall feeling you get. Exploring and trying to think of sinister ways of clearing rooms and progressing further. The switch in the Metroidvania concept kept being on my mind the whole day. I heard the voices when I was dreaming, I could hear them say: “What is it about this game?”.

Carrion, nothing equals this splendour

I had a quick chat with the developer and he said that they themselves had to rethink their approach. How do you make a game about this evil monster interesting and keep the level design engaging? I can only imagine that they must be thinking that there will be peace when they are done developing this game. Now while I lay my weary head to rest, I cannot wait to get this game on my Switch and lay waste to everything that is in my way.
