In partnership with ESL Play, the new edition of Metal League starts on August 10th and players from all around the world will be able to compete for the cash prize pool of US $5,000. The tournament has no registration fee and in order to participate teams who are interested just need to enter the Metal League in-game queue on the day and time of the tournament.

“In the first tournaments, 46 teams from 16 different countries went for the Heavy Metal Machines Metal League title, and only the Neon Knights (Europe) and Roadkill (Brazil) were able to celebrate as champions and take home the top prize money for each competition”, recalled Rodrigo Campos, Hoplon’s CEO. “We’re excited to find out who will earn the first prize in the North American server and become champions as part of this exclusive list”.

“Metal League 5 will be held during season five of the Metal Pass and has everything to be the most disputed and democratic of the tournament of the season until now, as both Europeans and South Americans can play in the North American server without lag. Several experienced teams and lots of great amateur players will be taking their chances in the Ranked Mode. Heavy Metal Machine can now also be played using any type of gamepads, including Xbox 360, Xbox One and PS4 controllers”, said Eros Carvalho, Hoplon’s Head of Studio. “This latest addition will bring an interesting balance to the tournament, as well as encouraging players who prefer these types of controllers to participate.”

The Metal League 5 starts on August 10th and will have many battles each week (every Saturday), including new teams who, thanks to an intelligent scoring system, can win the title even if they join the tournament whilst it’s already ongoing. At the end of the six Saturdays of the competition, the top eight teams will qualify to the finals, which will be played on September 21st, in best of 3 matches. The champions will take the US $2,000 prize, and the second spot will receive US $1,500, the third-place US $1,000 and the fourth takes US $500.

That was a lot of games and you can definitely say Ubisoft cater to everyone because there is at least one game there for a gamer. Was there anything mindblowing? No, but it was decent and they are constants that bring audiences back. Microsoft had recently announced the latest batch of games in it’s Xbox One X backward compatibility program for Xbox 360 titles. The program has involved up-scaling classic 360 titles from their native resolution to the XBox One X’s enhanced 4k resolution.

Beef us up!

The newest games to the lineup as mentioned are Forza: Horizon, Crackdown, The Witcher 2: Assassin’s of Kings and Fable: Anniversary. All seminal games in their own right, fans should be excited to play their old favorites in glorious 4k resolution. Although technically speaking, the resolution is only scaled up a flat 3 times, meaning from the original 1280 * 672 to a silky smooth 3840 * 2016. Added to this new quality is the option to now choose between Performance or Graphics mode to prioritize frame rate or visual quality. Performance mode tries to boost frame rate while keeping graphics at 720p, while Graphics mode boosts the resolution to approaching 4k while capping frame-rate at 30fps. However, if a game like Forza was originally capped at 30fps on the 360’s hardware, then the performance boost on the X won’t achieve anything.

The downside…

Limitations will exist, however, in that the original 360 games would have had 2D assets built for 720p presentation, so that text and flat art bitmaps scaled up may look indistinct or blurry around the edges. Further compounded is that the upgrade is purely aesthetic so physics engines have gone untouched. This leaves us to wonder whether Forza: Horizon’s cars will feel as weighty as in its predecessors, or if the Witcher’s running will seem to glide across than the landscape rather than propel himself forward.

To be honest though any negative issues are minor with the Xbox One X backward compatibility program. These are games that people can still get plenty of enjoyment from, they’re all available to purchase at less than the cost of a new title, and some of these games have been free through XBox Live Gold over the years. So carry on the good work Microsoft.

Just don’t re-release Watchdogs. Please.

With South Park: The Fractured But Whole coming out this week I decided it’s high time that I play South Park: The Stick of Truth because for some reason I had never played it before.

Heading into South Park: The Stick of Truth I was immediately impressed by the visuals they’re nothing groundbreaking but the presentation, however, is superb. You feel like you’ve been injected into the world of South Park from the humour to the characters to the layout of the videogame everything is so quintessentially South Park. Even the game system of The Stick of Truth utilises the iconic humour of Trey Parker and Matt Stone masterfully, for example, the magic is derived from the farts of your character and not only that some of the names of your magical abilities will be recognisable to those entrenched in RPG’s (Dragon Shout anyone?). While you dish out your farts to the various foes you come across, and these range from wood elves to crab people to even the horrifying Nazi zombies, you’ll learn the combat system is a more traditional turn-based affair.

You control your party, a two-man team comprised of yourself and an ally, a particular favourite of mine was Kenny or should I say “Princess” Kenny who uses “her” powers of seduction and “nature” magic (he uses swarms of rats and a unicorn) to devastating effect. Her unicorn spell is easily the best ability from the ally’s you have access to. This does bring me to the cinematic aspect of South Park: The Stick of Truth, it’s amazing, when your allies and your enemies unleash their attacks, in particular, their ultimate attacks the game shows off how funny and intense it can be and it can be a sight to behold especially when I summoned Mr. Slave and he “attacked” my enemies.

There are issues that do bog down The Stick of Truth such as a drop in frame rate which was quite jarring, the game crashed on me and thankfully though it has an auto-save feature that saved me falling too far back in my journey to earn that fabled stick of truth. This brings me to another issue, South Park: The Stick of Truth is not a challenging game sure you might hit a hiccup here or there but once you have the right gear BOOM a difficult fight turns into a cake walk.

I killed Kenny and took his place.

In my opinion though I believe you won’t care when issues like these crop up because there are two major positives, The Stick of Truth is a love letter to Dungeons & Dragons fans. The layout of the world, the vernacular of how the characters speak and the deep cut lore that is dropped every now and then is spectacular and this brings me to the crown on top of this regal venture, the story. It was stated by The Completionist that when Trey and Matt worked on this game they had over 500 pages of dialogue written and it shows. This is an incredible videogame filled with so many amazing characters that we have fallen in love with over two decades and the story is equal parts funny and engaging and that is what brings you back to The Stick of Truth.

South Park: The Stick of Truth is a fantastic game filled with incredible humour, respectible gameplay mechanics and character’s you won’t ever forget. If you get the chance to pick up the game be sure and purchase South Park: The Fractured But Whole because you’ll get a current gen version of The Stick of Truth and that’s well worth the cost so jump in and remember never fart on another dude’s balls.

Raven, Beast Boy, and Starfire each provide access to the Teen Titans Go! Adventure World in Jump City where players can explore several psychedelic areas from the Titans Tower to Wacka Doodles Amusement Park.

Players can bring Townsville to LEGO Dimensions with The Powerpuff Girls Team Pack which includes LEGO minifigures of the super-powered sisters, Blossom, and Bubbles. For access to additional special abilities, the 3-in-1 Octi can be rebuilt into the Super Skunk or Sonic Squid, and the PPG Smartphone can be rebuilt into the PPG Hotline and Powerpuff Mag-Net.

The Powerpuff Girls Fun Pack includes a Buttercup LEGO minifigure. Players can use this cherished champion of justice to fight crime and come just in time with super cool superpowers. The 3-in-1 Mega Blast Bot can be rebuilt into the Ka-Pow Cannon and Slammin’ Guitar to rock extra-awesome combat abilities.

Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup each provide access to The Powerpuff Girls Adventure World where players can unlock iconic locations like Pokey Oaks Elementary, Rainbow Land, and Professor Utonium’s lab. When competition beckons, players can go head-to-head in the Battle Arena for endless fun.

As someone who hasn’t ever been a fan of sports games I have to admit the introduction of the PlayStation VR  is a fascinating element. The episode will be available the same day for compatible iOS devices via the App Store, and for compatible Android-based devices via Google Play.

Special note for Episode 4: Players will leave this event in very different places depending on where they choose to go in the third act, and this will significantly affect their story rolling into the season finale as well.
