Aeon Drive is an action platformer, by developer 2Awesome Studio, set in a Cyberpunk Barcelona. The player controls Jackelyne, a stranded space pilot. She is on a quest to retrieve faulty pieces of dimension-bending machinery in order to preserve the space-time fabric of the universe. From the footage I have seen, it looks like the next big thing for speedrunners.

In Aeon Drive, you will teleport your way through time itself! Instead of using the usual live/die/repeat loop of most video games, Aeon Drive features a unique time-warping system. This saves players the frustration of unwanted repetition and keeps the challenge fresh and engaging. Does the level feel too difficult? Is a challenge driving you mad?

That is not a problem. Just recharge your timer before you run out. Then get those few extra seconds you so desperately need to beat the level. Or your personal best. Run out of time-warping capsules and you will be left to your own devices. Obstacles, enemies and traps are your worst enemy, as time relentlessly is always slipping away…

Teleport through lasers, spikes, saws and many other dangerous traps. Crouch-dash at the last moment to evade that incoming shot and make it to the end of the level by the skin of your teeth. Run through more than 80 levels across several areas of the beautiful city of Barcelona. But beware, everyone is out to get you.

Jump across the rooftops of Las Ramblas, keep dashing along awesome vistas such as the Torre Glòries, fight for your life in Park Güell. Don’t think just because you reach the beach you can take a breather and enjoy the sun! You can sign up to the Alpha here and get hyped for when Aeon Drive releases on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC.

Now for Playstation

We’re a month now into the Irish life-cycle of Sony’s subscription service PlayStation Now. Billed as “Netflix for games”, GamEir has been putting in the hours to find out two things; One, is the cloud-based system viable? Two, is it worth paying for?

This new gaming platform went live on the 21st of March, after being rolled out in 2015 in North America, and following suit in EU countries over the past 3 years. The premise is simple, you pay a monthly fee of 14.99, and get access to a library of over 500 games. The games range from PS2, PS3, and PS4. Playing them is download free and purely a streaming service. PC gamers may well recollect similar service OnLive, or more recently GeforceNow.

Now for Testing

Viability is the main crux of any cloud-based system. After all whats the point in having access to 500 games if they’re laggy and stuttering? Especially if you’re playing a timing based game like Ultra Street Fighter 4 where every frame matters? For the purpose of the review, I tested Playstation Now under several conditions, on both my own PS4 and my desktop PC(more on the multi-platform aspect later). I have a 100mb (supposed) fiber connection, with broadbandspeedtest.ie consistently gave me 60+mb/s download speeds. A constant lag of 4 frames per second is embedded into PlayStation Now. Sony has put this in so that as long as your connection is constant, the frames dropped will be consistent, and therefore a lot less noticeable.

For Playstation Now, Sony recommends no less than 5mb/s, so you would expect any fiber connection to handle the service trouble free. Given that this is a household service, I have two conditions to test under. Light to Moderate ranges from Playstation Now being given solo router access(light) to having two people in the house browsing or otherwise accessing the internet(moderate). Moderate to Heavy is up to and including other people streaming Netflix and/or gaming at the same time as my tests. I also used WiFi connections and wired Ethernet connections

Test OneWiFi, light to moderate traffic

  • Light traffic causes no visible problems to the service. Games run fine, loading times are fairly quick. Moderate traffic does cause slight problems to PS4 titles streaming, stuttering slightly. Older games run fine.

Test Two Ethernet connection, light to moderate traffic

  • No detectable problems.

Test ThreeWiFi, moderate to heavy

  • Once I started stressing the network problems increased. Under my heavy traffic conditions, the system was unworkable and could not load any games.

Test FourEthernet connection, moderate to heavy

  • Again the wired connection fared better, with heavy traffic causing problems with PS4 titles alone.

Now it’s important to understand that home Internet setups vary wildly in speeds and capabilities, but I offer this information only as a guideline. In any case, it was clear that a wired connection was the best option. The relevance here to your own gaming experience with this system will be paramount. The systems own loading screens are wont to remind us that a loss in connectivity means a loss to your game progress. Save often we are told.

Now for Games

The catalog looks as immense as you’d expect 500 games to look. Dwarfing even my own Steam library in scope. There are many classics from the past two generations, the Batman Arkham series, Oblivion, Red Dead, The Last of Us, its a fairly comprehensive list. The PS4 games, however, are limited to indie titles and older games from PS4’s back catalog. Notable developers EA, Activision and Ubisoft have been left out, but there is enough content here to satiate your gaming appetite. Add to this the fact that Sony is adding games every month and anyone in your home should find something to play. They also have a great collection of LEGO titles, ye know, for the kids!

Now for PC

The ability to play any of this collection on your PS4 is pretty cool. The ability to then pick up where you left off on your tablet, laptop or PC is awesome. This should be the main selling point of this service. It’s a fantastic feature and it works seamlessly. You don’t even need a PlayStation, just a PSN account, and your PS Now subscription. Every Playstation Now subscription also comes with 10GB of cloud storage for game saves. Tip of the cap to Sony for this one.

Now for Cost

14.99 a month is too high of a price point. It’s that simple. There are many ways Sony can go with PS Now, but given a year of PS Plus is 59.99, it’s hard to imagine anyone forking out 3 times as much per year for PS Now. Sony needs to have a look at how they sell this service. A package deal with PS plus would be a good idea. There are many ways to package this product. As an add-on with PS Plus, or with a lower price for longer subscription, or even simply adding extra modern titles. As it stands, however, the value just isn’t there.

Now for Conclusion

It’s difficult not to like how Sony is progressing with PlayStation Now. Its a fine catalog of games, the system works well, and playing old Playstation games on PC is outstanding. However the cost is prohibitive, the PS4 library is lacking, and resolution drops in modern games are pretty obvious. My recommendation: give the free 7-day trial a go and see for yourself. At the very least you’ll get to play some Oblivion again (and realize it has not aged well…)

With South Park: The Fractured But Whole coming out this week I decided it’s high time that I play South Park: The Stick of Truth because for some reason I had never played it before.

Heading into South Park: The Stick of Truth I was immediately impressed by the visuals they’re nothing groundbreaking but the presentation, however, is superb. You feel like you’ve been injected into the world of South Park from the humour to the characters to the layout of the videogame everything is so quintessentially South Park. Even the game system of The Stick of Truth utilises the iconic humour of Trey Parker and Matt Stone masterfully, for example, the magic is derived from the farts of your character and not only that some of the names of your magical abilities will be recognisable to those entrenched in RPG’s (Dragon Shout anyone?). While you dish out your farts to the various foes you come across, and these range from wood elves to crab people to even the horrifying Nazi zombies, you’ll learn the combat system is a more traditional turn-based affair.

You control your party, a two-man team comprised of yourself and an ally, a particular favourite of mine was Kenny or should I say “Princess” Kenny who uses “her” powers of seduction and “nature” magic (he uses swarms of rats and a unicorn) to devastating effect. Her unicorn spell is easily the best ability from the ally’s you have access to. This does bring me to the cinematic aspect of South Park: The Stick of Truth, it’s amazing, when your allies and your enemies unleash their attacks, in particular, their ultimate attacks the game shows off how funny and intense it can be and it can be a sight to behold especially when I summoned Mr. Slave and he “attacked” my enemies.

There are issues that do bog down The Stick of Truth such as a drop in frame rate which was quite jarring, the game crashed on me and thankfully though it has an auto-save feature that saved me falling too far back in my journey to earn that fabled stick of truth. This brings me to another issue, South Park: The Stick of Truth is not a challenging game sure you might hit a hiccup here or there but once you have the right gear BOOM a difficult fight turns into a cake walk.

South Park: The Stick of Truth GamEir Review

I killed Kenny and took his place.

In my opinion though I believe you won’t care when issues like these crop up because there are two major positives, The Stick of Truth is a love letter to Dungeons & Dragons fans. The layout of the world, the vernacular of how the characters speak and the deep cut lore that is dropped every now and then is spectacular and this brings me to the crown on top of this regal venture, the story. It was stated by The Completionist that when Trey and Matt worked on this game they had over 500 pages of dialogue written and it shows. This is an incredible videogame filled with so many amazing characters that we have fallen in love with over two decades and the story is equal parts funny and engaging and that is what brings you back to The Stick of Truth.

South Park: The Stick of Truth is a fantastic game filled with incredible humour, respectible gameplay mechanics and character’s you won’t ever forget. If you get the chance to pick up the game be sure and purchase South Park: The Fractured But Whole because you’ll get a current gen version of The Stick of Truth and that’s well worth the cost so jump in and remember never fart on another dude’s balls.

Some fantastic news for all you music aficionados because ATLUS is partnering with iam8bit to release the Persona 5 soundtrack on vinyl records! So what can you expect? Well, there are going to be two editions available for purchase:

Essential Edition – This version will come with four vinyl records that contain selected tracks curated by the Atlus Sound Team and will be priced at $100.
Deluxe Edition – This version will feature the complete Persona 5 soundtrack on six vinyl records and will be priced at $175 (limited pressing of 1,000).

Besides having sweet Persona 5 music on vinyl, you can bet that the records will come packaged with stunning album cover art. We can’t reveal it just yet, but please stay tuned to iam8bit for more information in the future. AND THAT’S NOT ALL! iam8bit will also be documenting the entire creation process of the albums via videos, photos, and interviews. This includes:

Mastering – They’ll visit their favorite mastering studio, Infrasonic, and chronicle how music is mixed for the retro technology that is vinyl.

Test Presses – They’ll show you what it’s like to create lacquers & test presses, which serve as the benchmark for the vinyl’s audio quality.

Vinyl Production – They’ll hang with their friends from Noiseland at their factory in France, capturing the analog magic of melting “wax” and stamping records. It’s pretty crazy to see because some of these machines are nearly 100 years old!

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has revealed new information around three highly collectible new expansion packs for LEGO Dimensions, the LEGO toy and video game hybrid that will be available in the UK and Ireland on the 12th of May 2017. The Goonies Level Pack, the Harry Potter Fun Pack and LEGO City Fun Pack will broaden the selection of the world’s most popular entertainment brands available for the game, allowing players to customise their experience by mixing and matching favourite characters and universes with full compatibility. In addition, LEGO mini figures included within each of these expansion packs come with special golden Toy Tags which unlock a free play Adventure World of the corresponding entertainment brand, as well as a Battle Arena that can be reached through Vorton. Each Battle Arena is unique to the world of the character used to unlock it and features competitive split-screen local gameplay for up to four players, with four exciting gameplay modes including Capture the Flag, Objective, Base Bash, and Tick, Tag, Boom!

The Goonies Level Pack includes a complete level of The Goonies gameplay where players can help Sloth and Chunk escape the Fratelli hideout and join the rest of the Goonies on their search for One-Eyed Willy’s treasure. Players can use Sloth’s Super Strength to smash through walls or play as Chunk and use his infamous Truffle Shuffle. The rebuildable One-Eyed Willy’s Pirate Ship will sail on water and can also be built into the Fanged Fortune and the Inferno Cannon; while the rebuildable Skeleton Organ has Sonar Smash abilities and can also be built into the Skeleton Jukebox and Skele-Turkey for added game play capabilities. Sloth provides access to a new The Goonies Battle Arena, and also the Adventure World where players can explore Mikey’s House, Inferno Cove and the Goon Docks. Once the level is complete, players will be able to replay through the game and other levels as any of the seven other Goonies characters to solve additional puzzles and access more collectibles in their journey through the LEGO multiverse.

Players can extend their wizarding adventures in LEGO Dimensions with the Harry Potter Fun Pack which includes a Hermione Granger LEGO mini figure. She can cast magical spells such as Wingardium Leviosa to levitate objects and Lumos to light up dark places. She also allows players to unlock the Harry Potter™ Battle Arena for a competitive match, along with the Adventure World where they can explore locations in Hogwarts, Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. Players can build the 3-in-1 rideable Buckbeak the Hippogriff and use its Stomp Attack to smash Silver LEGO bricks, then rebuild it into the Giant Owl and the Fierce Falcon for additional in-game abilities.

Players can help stop crime in the LEGO Dimensions multiverse with the LEGO City Fun Pack featuring a Chase McCain LEGO mini figure. Chase can become a Miner to break Silver LEGO bricks or a Fireman to use his Water Beam to put out fires. Gamers can use his LEGO City Detective Scanner to track down bad guys and change his disguise to unlock more abilities. In the LEGO City Adventure World, there are new areas to explore like Blackwell’s moon base and the LEGO City Police Department. Players can also compete with up to three of their friends in the LEGO City Battle Arena. Additionally, Chase’s 3-in-1 Police Helicopter can be built to fire off bolts, then rebuild it into the Police Hovercraft and Police Plane for additional in-game abilities.

Developed by TT Games and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, LEGO Dimensions is now available for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 computer entertainment systems, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and the Wii U system.
