Games Workshop have announced that work has begun on a TV series set in the Warhammer 40k universe. The show will be called “Eisenhorn”, and will follow the exploits of Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn, of the Ordo Xenos. Eisenhorn is a fan favorite character, having first appeared in Dan Abnetts novel series, and subsequently featuring in video games and comics.

With the current fashion of developing popular fiction for TV being in full swing, Warhammer 40k could be the most daunting venture. Even the setting alone could take hours to explain. And that’s only the start of the issues. How in the hell do they create Space Marines in a live action setting? Or Xenos, or Chaos, or unending war across a million battlefields?
However, therein lies the genius of Gregor Eisenhorn as a subject. A large part of his career is spent as a detective. In fact, his exploits generally involve investigation into mass murderers, or serial killers. Sure, his quarry are heretics, tainted by Chaos, but it will give a new audience some understanding of Eisenhorns motivations. Compounded to this then, we can further appreciate his journey into radicalism. There is even scope there for comment on modern policing methods. After all, we all want the bad guys to be caught and punished, but how much power do we give these agencies, and at what cost?

There have been no details on production for Warhammer 40k: Eisenhorn released yet. Big Light Productions are handling the project, with Frank Spotnitz named as show runner. Spotnitz has previously worked on The Man in the High Castle, and The X-Files. We’ll be keeping a close eye on Eisenhorn as it develops, but if you need a Warhammer 40,000 fix before then, Angels of Death will be out later this year.
