Ever wanted to immerse yourself in the life of a mother of three children? Go on the run on from a devastating flood? Gain magic powers as you proceed? Be an accessory to murder of an old man? Well then my friend Macrotis: A Mother’s Journey is the game for you! Now let’s get into the nitty-gritty details of said game.
I like pretty colours.
I like puzzles.
I like well-drawn illustrations.
Macrotis: A Mother’s Journey had all three of these ingredients and unfortunately didn’t hold up.
I love the vast majority of titles that fall under the 2.5D side scroller puzzle games. Macrotis: A Mother’s Journey started off very well, a captivating hand drawn intro which set the scene. You play as a bilby mother of 3 trying to get back to your children after a great flood has separated you all. If you’re unaware of what a bilby is as I was, Wikipedia seems to describe this random ass creature as a rabbit-bandicoot. Beware this game is far from anything Naughty Dog would produce. As you invest more time into the game it becomes blatantly obvious that the game lacks real purpose or what any good game should have, fun.
The Voice That Made My Ears Bleed
Upon playing the game you hear over and over and over again, the excruciatingly painful voice of the mother bilby speak as you encounter obstacles. Always something negative to say or a completely clueless comment to make, I started making the bilby die as revenge for all the punishment it had put my ears through.
More Bugs Than A Bug’s Life!
I’m usually very lenient when it comes to a bug here or there in a game, especially if in BETA. Macrotis: A Mother’s Journey, however, partook in the cardinal sin which is a game breaking bug. On multiple occasions, the game would spaz out when a cut scene was due and not allow you to progress through the puzzle. Most gamers would say fair enough let’s just restart the puzzle from the last save. Yeah sorry to tell you that doesn’t work. The only way to progress through the bug was to restart the entire chapter so if you were an hour in and encounter one of these bugs, it set you back a while.
Puzzles To Challenge A Toddler
Okay, I may be exaggerating here a little but the game boasts water physics puzzles on its steam listing and the only puzzle I encountered when it came to water was don’t drown. Like all puzzle games, Macrotis: A Mother’s Journey begins by getting you used to the basic mechanics of the game and then adds one or two new mechanics along the way. The only problem is the puzzles stay basic. Not much in the way of a challenge. Even the time challenges were painfully slow, I found myself playing games on my phone in between waiting for a floating platform to catch up to me.
Is It Worth Playing?
Macrotis: A Mother’s Journey offers little challenge from a puzzle based game and thus does not suit the purpose of the game. The art style on the cut scenes seems to change halfway through the game and the main character’s voice sounds like a pig being tortured. This game is not worth playing as there are plenty more puzzle based side-scrollers that are actually worth your time. Ones with amazing stories, captivating worlds, and characters. Macrotis: A Mother’s Journey got the worst fate you could give to a steam game, “Hide from my steam library”.
