However, this may be the last year our event takes place in Portlaoise, so the team are hoping to make it bigger and better than ever before. Alongside their trusty mascot, Celtic Connor, they’re trying to save their convention. The Portlaoise event has been running since 2017 having been first set up by Martin Moore of Celtic Comics (Sadly now closed) in Portlaoise.

Celtic Con is THE convention of the Midlands. It is based in an area that is predominantly interested in sports, but the team wanted to make their voices heard. Celtic Con is all about bringing together people from all walks of life. Be it people who just want to have a wander, artists, comic lovers, gamers, cosplayers and more! Everyone has a place and everyone is welcome.

The team prides itself on creating a safe space, filled with love, support and accessibility. As well as this, they emphasize support and love for the LGBTQ+ community, positive mental health, self-love, and giving a platform to those on the spectrum. They believe in everyone having a voice and a space. They also love seeing the community shine.

At Celtic Con, we feature a range of different talents. Talents that can go overlooked, especially in a smaller area like the Midlands. We showcase some of Ireland’s finest comic and children’s books creators, digital and traditional artists, crafters, and more! Our talents this year are both local and international, and we are very excited to have such a range. All are worth coming along to see, and purchasing from if you can. Every little helps, and everyone is truly grateful for the support!

And this year, we have an extra special gaming twist! Celtic Con has always had a gaming zone, but this year we have branched out! Celtic Con has very proudly partnered up with Level Up Gaming to bring a gaming van to the event! The gaming van includes 10 4K resolution TVs, 2 PS5s, 8 Xbox Series Xs, and 2 Nintendo Switch consoles. The van itself is also fitted with comfortable seating, and features a range of popular games for players to choose from. Up to 12 people can be accommodated inside at any one time to play games!

That’s not all attendees get with Celtic Con

On top of all the above, there are some extra special guests and exhibitions this year! Exhibiting in the Dunamaise Arts Centre there will be Jmac Makeup (finalist, Glow Up Series 2) and Brick Con. Also attending as a guest is Colm Griffin. Colm is from Carlow and is known as an artist, writer and director. He has worked as an artist for Image, IDW, Titan Comics, Source Point Press, and more.

Special Cosplay Guests REEL ICONS Ireland, 501 Ireland Garrison (The StarWars guys) The Guild of Nerds will also be in attendance. With guests like these, this event is not one to be missed. And remember, this event is totally free to attend. Also, on the day, the team will be raising money in a Charity Auction for the Irish Cancer Society. This is a cause very close to the hearts of the team, and one they love to support.

Extended Reality or ‘XR’ is the collective name for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). VR is a computer-generated artificial environment with scenes that appear to be real, while AR is a digital overlay onto the real world, which is viewed through your phone or an iPad.

An exciting lineup has been revealed

This year’s lineup has been confirmed to include three unique paid-for experiences along with an additional three free bonus experiences available for visitors to the festival.

Appearing at the festival will be the magical VR journey through the work of Catalan architect and designer Antoni Gaudí in Gaudí, The Atelier of the Divine.

Attendees will take part in a 20-minute experience designed for small groups of six.

The story will take festival goers back to 1926 when, weakened by age and feeling his death approaching, Gaudí invites his new assistants to discover his studio, to understand his vision and complete his work.

The heart-wrenching voyage of survival Stay Alive My Son is also one of the key events, based on the internationally acclaimed memoirs of Pin Yathay, this immersive 60-minute story thrusts audiences into the shoes of a pained father forced to make the gut-wrenching decision to abandon his six-year-old son to survive during the Cambodian genocide.

The final headline experience will be Eternal, the profound exploration of eternal life, where during this 20-minute experience attendees will step into the realm of eternity with a mesmerising audio journey designed exclusively for one person, in the comfort of their own bed.

As intimate audiences of just two people per time slot climb into a bed they will delve into a profound exploration of eternal life and contemplate the sacrifices one might make for immortality.

Belfast XR: An unforgettable experience

Deepa Mann-Kler, director and curator for Belfast XR Festival which is an annual gathering for the XR arts – storytelling, visual arts, music, drama, dance, literature and theatre, said bringing virtual and augmented reality content to new audiences locally is something the team at Belfast XR are passionate about.

She said: “Our ambition is to create an unmissable annual gathering for XR that inspires storytelling and our passion is to bring the best global virtual and augmented reality content to new local audiences. You don’t need to have used a virtual reality headset before, as our team will guide you through the whole process.”

For attendees who purchase tickets for any of the headline events this year they will have exclusive access to three additional free experiences.

• Emperor is a 40-minute-long captivating virtual reality experience that delves into the mind of a father grappling with aphasia. Attendees will witness the poignant journey of a daughter striving to connect with her speechless father, uncovering the depths of his memories along the way.

• Flow is a 15-minute experience where users will be swept away by the winds through what appears to be an ordinary day filled with turbulence. Encounter the sensations of smells, heat and breath, as the air currents unveil hidden presences and reveal captivating events in the life of a woman.

• SEN is also a 15-minute experience where attendees will enter the mystical realm of the traditional Japanese tea room, where they’ll meet SEN, the tea spirit. As disaster strikes and SEN dissolves into the universe, it discovers unity with all beings, bringing calm to the tea room.

Running on Wednesday, February 28th and Thursday 29th this year’s festival theme is Legacy which will offer attendees the chance to experience world history in captivating ways allowing audiences to step into the past, interact with historical figures, and explore significant events firsthand.

Come one, come all to Belfast XR

Belfast XR Festival is both for XR enthusiasts and those who haven’t experienced any form of XR in the past.

Deepa explained: “The Festival is aimed at 16+ years of age and is open to everyone. You don’t need to have experienced AR, VR or any of these types of experiences before. We have an amazing team who will guide you through the whole process from the minute you step into The Black Box.

“I want people to have memorable experiences. I want them to be altered, in a good way. I want them to talk about how it made them feel. I want to increase their appetite to experience more.

Players can join the festive Haunted by Daylight celebrations, which starts on October 11th and closes on November 3rd. The Haunted by Daylight festivities will kick off with the release of the anticipated store Collections, while the newest Archive Tome will be released on October 12th. Lastly, the sought-after in-game Halloween event will be live on October 13th.

The Haunted by Daylight in-game event, accessible from October 13th to November 3rd, will allow players to take advantage of a slew of horrifying cosmetics to unlock, the Fog’s unsettling atmosphere, and intense challenges. The Dead by Daylight lobby and loading screens will be decked with fearsome pumpkins and frightful decorations, Players will also experience new gameplay, requiring them to gather and steal “Void Energy”. Lastly, daily login rewards will be available, encouraging players to connect to the game every day.

More Treats from the Dead by Daylight Store

​Costumes are mandatory on Halloween. Therefore, players are invited to dress their favourite Killers and Survivors in their snazziest attire with new Outfits from the Hallowed Blight Collection and the limited-time Tricks and Treats Collection. These are available from October 11th to November 3rd. The Midnight Grove Collection will make a comeback during this time as well with two new Very Rare Outfits for Mikaela Reid and The Doctor.

​The Hallowed Blight Collection – a creepy metamorphosis that occurs from within – features two Very Rare Outfits – for The Oni and Albert Wesker, The Mastermind. The Blighted Wesker Outfit looks right out of a terrifying biohazardous experiment gone wrong.

​Nobody could predict the complex interactions that would occur between the serum and Uroboros. That didn’t stop Albert Wesker from testing the Blighted serum on himself. This interaction caused Wesker to transform into a further transformed humanoid.

​The Oni’s Bursting with Fury Outfit emphasizes the character’s rage. His overwhelming strength made him a priority candidate for testing the Blighted serum. The searing pain of the experiment, more than anything, made his rage even more potent.

​Players can also take advantage of the limited-time Tricks and Treats Collection. These feature exquisite Halloween Costumes in the form of 2 new Very Rare Outfits for Jane Romero and Dwight Fairfield – Hollywood Glamour and Toilet Paper Mummy.

Be careful what you wish for with special Final Fantasy VII Event

With this announcement everyone and their mother have been so excited. Honestly so am I. This title has always been my favourite. Though this is an excruciatingly short event I can only hope that they’re going to say thank you for all the decades of love and go into the trailer to cap it off.

There are other elements though that mean this could be an event that could completely backfire on the team. For example what if the announcement is about one of the other Final Fantasy VII adjacent games that have been announced? I doubt anybody would be pleased about those.

There are already naysayers. Fans who worry about which particular character will be the focus of the game should the second part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake be announced. For some reason, fans are taking umbrage with the possibility of Zack being playable. Frankly, I can’t wait. Whatever this celebration event may bring.

• Personalized Special Research: Trainers can personalize their Pokémon GO Fest experience by choosing a difficulty level for their Special Research. You also get to choose a focus: From catching to exploring, or battling. Trainers who complete Special Research will earn an encounter with the Mythical Pokémon Shaymin in its Land Forme.
• Rotating habitats and Pokémon encounters: Different Pokémon will appear in rotating hourly habitats during the event. For the first time in Pokémon GO, Trainers might encounter several different Shiny Pokémon. These include Shiny Shroomish, Shiny Numel, Shiny Karrablast, Shiny Axew, or Shiny Shelmet!
  • A detailed list of the habitat hours and the Pokémon appearing during them can be found here.

• A very special Pikachu: Trainers can also find a special Pikachu in the wild. These encounters are one-star raids, and as a surprise encounter in GO Snapshot. If Trainers are lucky, they might encounter a Shiny one too.
• Trainers will also find new, Shaymin-inspired avatar items in the in-game store and special Pokémon GO Fest 2022–themed stickers from PokéStops and Gifts.

These test your spatial awareness and problem-solving skills, while also cracking you up with their absurd black humour. Combining the campaigns of the first and second games and including the co-op missions too you’ll have the complete portable Portal experience at your fingertips.

It seems like the collection will be available on the e-Shop only, with a vague 2022 release window promised. The price will be $19.99 in the US. A real bargain for true puzzle excellence! Other details are sparse but we should hear more as we near a release date.

Hopefully, this isn’t the last of Valve’s Switch efforts. The prospect of Half-Life or Left 4 Dead on the go is too alluring…
