KOEI TECMO Europe and developer Gust have revealed FAIRY TAIL 2. This is the new action RPG based on the popular franchise FAIRY TAIL. And it is a direct sequel to KOEI TECMO’s 2020 game. The series is loved by fans of both the manga and anime. The original manga sold more than 72 million copies worldwide. FAIRY TAIL 2 is currently in development and scheduled for release this winter. The title will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Windows PC via Steam.

FAIRY TAIL 2 – I’m all fired up!

FAIRY TAIL 2 brings fans back to the epic action of the original series’ climax, the Alvarez Empire Arc. In this new title, players will not only be able to control Natsu and Lucy as main characters but also other members of the FAIRY TAIL guild in order to defeat their greatest enemy, Zeref, the Emperor Spriggan of the Alvarez Empire, who is protected by the Spriggan 12 and the Black Dragon, Acnologia.

FAIRY TAIL 2 features 3D graphics and improved gameplay with more intense and spectacular battles, in which players will use more powerful magic and a variety of other strategic elements in order to take down enemies in stunning action sequences. Players will also be able to explore the vast map seamlessly, enhancing the experience of the original work while furthering the thrilling story of the final chapter.

In addition, the game features “Character Stories”, that are original to this game. Which will give players the unprecedented opportunity to discover new aspects of their favourite characters. Fans will also enjoy an original story, the “Key to Hidden Secrets”, that will allow them to experience events taking place after the final battle of the original work.

All you anime fans out there, like me, have likely been waiting for the next big anime title. We had several strong years of Naruto dominating the charts with Ultimate Ninja Storm, then, of course, there were the Dragon Ball Z Budokai titles and now? Well, audiences in the West have their first foray into the Kingdom of Fiore as we get to play with the wizards of the infamous magic guild Fairy Tail in the appropriately titled RPG, Fairy Tail.

There’s a fire in my belly

In Fairy Tail, you follow the infamous guild of Fiore through several key arcs in the anime/manga. You play as a whole host of members in the guild and for the most part, it’s simple, dumb, fun. That is until you realise, and you realise this quite quickly, that this game was created with the bare bones of knowledge required to make a Fairy Tail game.

When I started Fairy Tail, I immediately noticed that the developers had decided to skip the first 12 arcs of the adored manga/anime. What did this mean for me and any gamer? It meant that unless you are a big fan of the anime/manga you will not care about any of these characters when the story decides to skip 7 years within the first 5 minutes of the game because you’ll have no prior knowledge to what all these characters have gone through up until this point.

Another immediate element that took me out of the game was the graphics. The visuals of the game from the characters designs to the locations are a generation behind. This title is a middling PS3 game not a game in the wind-down years of the PS4. This was a key element that the developers needed to nail down because what Fairy Tail excels at are the visuals in their battles. When a fight is happening in the anime or manga there is frenetic energy. It’s a visceral experience and this game barely hits those highs.

This is not the vehicle for Fairy Tail

I suppose the biggest frustration is that the combat system chosen for it is wrong. This is a turn-based combat system where a five-man team fights against any number of foes. This restrained combat system where you strategise to take on your foes simply does not convey the over the top action of Fairy Tail.

Even if the combat is restricted the design of some of the “spells” is still ridiculous and fun. Seeing Lucy summon Virgo and watch as Virgo washes away Lucy in her attack along with the enemies is quite hilarious. It may still be lost on you if you’re coming in as a non-fan as their relationship is barely explained save for a few scant lines of dialogue scattered across the game.

The Dragon Slayer wizards are given the most devotion because obviously they are the coolest characters. Natsu, Laxus, Gajeel, Wendy, Sting and Rogue are all playable characters and all have visually engaging abilities, even if one or two of the moves seem like copy-paste choices by the developers (looking at you dragon roar).

While the combat is somewhat engaging at times the rest of the game is padded with side quests to make the main story drag out as long as possible. You can’t progress at certain points of the game if your Guild Rank isn’t at a certain level so you have to complete menial tasks, these range from boring fetch quests to kill a certain amount of a particular type of enemy. It’s infuriating, especially when the game takes a considerable amount of time to actually stop holding your hand and kick into gear.

I’ve seen this before and I’ve seen it done better

While I was playing Fairy Tail all I could think of was Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3. This game was the peak of the Ninja Storm franchise. It allowed players to travel the world of Naruto and you also got to engage in frenzied battle unleashing your Jutsu of choice. This could easily have been implemented in Fairy Tail with battles that have equally as dramatic visuals.

I will say in defence of the action RPG when the battles did reach a certain level I did feel the fervour. This, however, may have been due to the fact that I had an audience who were cheering and jeering me on.

I’ve been streaming on the GamEir Twitch channel and as I played through this game and discussed my issues with it I’ve enjoyed the back and forth with the obvious fans of Fairy Tail who have picked this title up and have also felt some of the failings of this game.

Fairy Tail is a fun game. Uncomplicated, straightforward and at times enjoyable, but I cannot recommend anyone buy this at its current price unless you are a hardcore fan, even then it’s a tough sell.

Koei Tecmo Europe and developer GUST Studios released their spellbinding JRPG, Fairy Tail, on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC via Steam. The game, based on the anime and manga of the same name by Hiro Mashima, marks the first time a Fairy Tail game has been released on home console in the West!

Fairy Tail invites players to re-live, or experience for the first time, the series’ enchanting storyline from the popular Tenrou Island arc through to the Tartaros arc, along with all-new never before seen story and quest elements. The magical world of Fairy Tail is brought to life with remarkable detail throughout this all-new gaming experience, with phenomenal focus on delivering the type of magic and mystique fans of the worldwide sensation anime and manga series have been craving.

The character’s unique magic abilities from the series are brought to life within the game, including Unison Raids where characters can combine together to unleash their magic spells at once and overpower enemies. Even Extreme Magic Spells can be used, including Kanna’s Fairy Glitter – which can be activated when magic attacks are combined – to get the upper hand in battle.

Outside of combat, Fairy Tail allows players to develop their relationships with their guildmates, experiencing new story interactions as well as strengthening their magic abilities. Players will even be able to upgrade different areas of the Fairy Tail guild, and as they improve their guild, take on requests, and develop their relationships with their allies, they are able to restore the guild’s ranking to No. 1 in Fiore.

Koei Tecmo America and developer GUST Studios have announced the first details to a host of enchanting new magical abilities featured in their upcoming JRPG, Fairy Tail. The game is set to launch across North America on July 31st for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 and on July 30th for Windows PC via Steam.

Fairy Tail’s extraordinary world of magic and dragons is captured in remarkable detail throughout this all-new gaming experience, with a phenomenal focus of delivering the type of magic and mystique fans of the worldwide sensation anime and manga series have been craving.

Big magic for big characters

In Fairy Tail, characters can now combine in a Unison Raid to unleash their magic spells at once to overpower enemies. This Unison Raid ability originally premiered in the Fairy Tail anime and manga, but in the game, all new magic and character team-ups will be featured, introducing exciting new powers from never before seen character combinations.

In addition, a series of Extreme Magic Spells will also be introduced, including Kanna’s Fairy Glitter – which can be activated when magic attacks are combined, Makarov’s “Giant” magic, and even a spell known as Exceed Special, which will help your party out in times of terrible trouble.

Each magic spell carries unique elemental properties and affinities, with magic dealing more damage to specific opponents. Characters can then upgrade their magic spells by gaining experience points throughout their journey.

Also, by using magic attacks during battle, the party’s Awakening Gauge increases. When the gauge is fully filled, characters can be Awakened, enabling them to utilize even more powerful magical abilities – and with each character employing different Awakening Modes, players will be able to expand their strategies across a broad range of sorceries and enemies.

A Digital Deluxe version of Fairy Tail has also been recently revealed, boasting special Grand Magic Games team costumes, a bonus Lacrima set, and a DDX Limited Ryza costume for Lucy!

Purchasing any version of the game, physically or digitally, within a limited time from launch will also unlock the Early Purchase Bonus special Miss Fairy Tail costume for Erza.

KOEI TECMO Europe and developer GUST Studios have revealed new guest characters featured in their upcoming magical JRPG, Fairy Tail. New guild hall features have also been detailed to give a taste of the different gameplay highlights outside of battle, when the game launches across Europe on the 25th June for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC via Steam.

During Fairy Tail’s gripping narrative players will team-up with a range of guest characters from other guilds across Magnolia to take on common enemies. These fan favourite characters, ready to team-up and support in battle, include: the ‘Arc of Time User’ Ultear Milkovich, from the Crime Sorcière guild; ‘Ice-Make Wizard,’ Lyon Vastia from the Lamia Scale guild; the ‘Burning Hair Wizard,’ Flare Corona from the Raven Tail guild; and Minerva Orland, ‘Sabertooth Guild’s Finest Lady.’

And while guest characters are not playable, they will instead join your party and automatically perform a range of powerful magic abilities – including those featured in the anime and manga!

Throughout the Fairy Tail adventure, from Tenrou Island to the Grand Magic Games and beyond, the guild’s famed hall becomes a key point for party members to prepare for upcoming quests. Inside the guild, items are available for sale and trade — including consumable items, Lacrima, and a variety of materials at the item shop. There’s even a selection of drinks at the bar that provide different status effects to party members. By saving up gold and purchasing upgrades for the guild, an increased inventory of items and drinks are available to purchase, and the appearance of the guild itself becomes increasingly more extravagant.

Within the guild hall, players are also able to talk to their comrades and challenge them to thrilling one-on-one duels, with the winner receiving rewards based upon the character they just defeated. Players are also able to find members of other guilds across Magnolia and challenge them to duels, leading to all-new exciting battles that have never appeared in the manga or anime!

KOEI TECMO Europe has also revealed a limited Guild Box edition of Fairy Tail, available exclusively through the game’s official website. Pre-orders are set to open soon, with KOEI TECMO Europe revealing the exact date on the @koeitecmoeurope social channel.

To celebrate the upcoming release of Fairy Tail, Koei Tecmo Europe has worked hard on a selection of different designs to be used as inside cover artwork. They have also announced that they will be inviting fans to vote for their favourite image, from 3 unique designs featuring the Fairy Tail guild, with the highest voted image making it inside the final retail version of the game at launch!

The three pillars of Fairy Tail

The artwork of these different designs represents the various elements that fans came to love about the anime/manga.

Option A. The over the top action and style. Seriously the fights are awesome. My particular favourite is between Laxus and Natsu which is part of the best arc in the franchise in my opinion.

Option B. Is all about the humour, the dumb, dumb humour and I love it. From Gray’s constantly going shirtless for no reason to Natsu getting beaten up whenever Gildarts showed up this was another element to cheer for.

Option C. Yeah this element is no surprise especially if you’ve watched 5 minutes of an episode of Fairy Tail. Fanservice. This franchise had copious amounts of well endowed female characters with outfits that had no function outside of making young teens feel weird. As I write this now this is the frontrunner in the vote.

If you ask me Option A. should win. It’s the best part of Fairy Tail.

Fans can get involved right now on Facebook and Twitter – voting closing on the 31st of March at 12 pm GMT.

Koei Tecmo Europe and developer GUST Studios have announced two huge additions to their upcoming magical JRPG, Fairy Tail, boosting the roster to 16 playable characters with the inclusion of Gildarts — “the strongest man in the Fairy Tail guild”— while also revealing the first details on the game’s Eclipse story arc.

Fairy Tail is set to be released across Europe on the 25th of June for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC via Steam.

The most destructive member of Fairy Tail has arrived

One of the most powerful additions to the Fairy Tail roster to date, Gildarts is an S-Class Mage who uses “Crush” magic to reduce anything he touches to rubble. Gildarts joins the fight in support of Natsu and other party members, using his overwhelming strength to help swing the odds in the guild’s favour.

Throughout the adventure, fans will be able to put together their own dream team of Fairy Tail members and their rivals, including everyone from Gildarts to Erza, Gray, and Gajeel. The more characters continue to fight together in the same party, their bonds will gradually strengthen, and as their friendship level increases, special conversations called “Bond Dialogue” will play out, including original dialogue written specifically for the Fairy Tail game.

In addition, the first details of the game’s new Eclipse arc have also been revealed. This popular storyline revolves around “Project Eclipse,” an experiment that opens up a gate to the past, unleashing Dragons that lived over 400 years ago into the present timeline. Can Lucy and friends survive a fight against the great dragon Zirconis? (If you’ve read the manga or watched the anime you know the answer to that question)

It’s about damn time

I have been saying this since the announcement of this game that I wanted Gildarts to show up. Between him, Gajeel, Natsu, and Sting my team going into the upcoming JRPG is now set in stone 🙂

Koei Tecmo Europe and developer GUST Studios have announced that their upcoming magical JRPG, Fairy Tail, will now be released worldwide on the 25th of June. The change of date, with the game originally scheduled for a 19th of March release, is due to the developer’s desire to further enhance the game for a more enriching Fairy Tail experience.

Please allow us to take further time to polish the game to ensure it is as high quality as possible, so we can offer you a truly immersive experience. Mages across all of Europe get ready because a new trailer has dropped for Fairy Tail. The turn-based RPG will be available on the 19th of March 2020 for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam.

Players will be able to experience the enchanting storyline of the fan-favourite Tenrou Island, Grand Magic Games, and Tartaros arcs, as well as other episodes from the original canon based on Hiro Mashima’s best-selling manga and anime series of the same name.

In Fairy Tail, completing battles and quests will not only level up party members, but it will also lead to character bonding scenarios, provide options to upgrade the guild, and eventually raise the ‘Guild Rank’ – enabling players to take on more challenging missions in their quest to become the greatest guild in Fiore.

Getting this release date news makes the recent reveal of the upcoming characters coming to the playable roster of Fairy Tail even more exciting. We only have to wait three months before we can travel Fiore with Natsu and the gang burning down hordes of evil mages and fulfilling quests. The question now is what else will be announced between now and March? Who else will be announced as a playable character and what other villains will we get to smash?
