Netflix has announced The Witcher: Blood Origin, a limited series from The Witcher universe. Blood Origin will be a six-part, live-action limited series, and a prequel to the hit Netflix series The Witcher.
The story of Blood Origin will be set in an elven world 1200 years before the world of The Witcher. Blood Origin will tell a story lost to time – the origin of the very first Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal “conjunction of the spheres,” when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.
The Witcher: Blood Origin brings in new blood
Andrzej Sapkowski will serve as creative consultant on the series. Jason Brown and Sean Daniel from Hivemind, and Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko from Platige Films will all serve as executive producers.
Waterford man Declan de Barra will act as Executive Producer and Showrunner and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will act as Executive Producer. He seems thrilled beyond belief to be bringing his voice to The Continent.
“As a lifelong fan of fantasy, I am beyond excited to tell the story The Witcher: Blood Origin. A question has been burning in my mind ever since I first read The Witcher books – What was the Elven world really like before the cataclysmic arrival of the humans? I’ve always been fascinated by the rise and fall of civilizations, how science, discovery, and culture flourish right before that fall. How vast swathes of knowledge are lost forever in such a short time, often compounded by colonization and a rewriting of history. Leaving only fragments of a civilization’s true story behind. The Witcher: Blood Origin will tell the tale of the Elven civilization before its fall, and most importantly reveal the forgotten history of the very first Witcher”
Lauren Schmidt Hissrich discussed her thoughts on the excitement of this latest element of The Witcher Universe:
“I am so thrilled to collaborate with Declan and the Netflix team on The Witcher: Blood Origin. It’s an exciting challenge to explore and expand The Witcher universe created by Andrzej Sapkowski, and we can’t wait to introduce fans to new characters and an original story that will enrich our magical, mythical world even more.”
Then to cap it all off author Andrezej Sapkowski chimed in with his two cents:
“It is exciting that the world of Witcher – as planned in the very beginning – is expanding. I hope it will bring more fans to the world of my books.”
The world of the Witcher explodes with new possibilities
This is fascinating news. There was already the supposed animated film Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf which will follow Vesemir. Now fans have Blood Origin to look forward to. This limited series telling the tale of the Continent and the first Witcher is fascinating but the fact that the Conjunction of the Spheres is involved is easily the best part.
Having learned from the games and books fans will know there are far more terrifying creatures out in the world that we haven’t seen yet and Blood Origin is the perfect setting. For example, could we see The Witcher version of vampires? These were one of the first beings that came through and they are terrifying. The title gives a possible hint that they could be a part of the narrative.
Not only that we will get the origin of the Witchers. Does that mean that fans will finally find out what infamous ‘The Trials of the Grasses’ entail? I’m of two minds with Blood Origin. It could be something amazing or it could unravel the deep mystery of the world that we’ve enjoyed throughout the games, books and series. Hopefully, it is the former.
