When you read this article you’ll already be aware that the European Games Week has been cancelled and sadly this has put out so many people. Even though the people behind it are giving full refunds there is still the glaring issue of attendees who are flying over to the now-cancelled event as well as those who are staying in hotels. There are no refunds being offered for the hotels or the flights. So what do attendees do? That is where The Guild of Nerds, The Republic of Players, and Mini Arcade Systems came in with the Dublin Gaming Mini Con.

The details behind Dublin Gaming Mini Con

On Sunday, September 22nd at the Wynns Hotel Dublin this collection of groups will be running a free entry mini gaming con as a back up for the European Games Festival.

They have no official affiliation with the con but have come together to put on a small event for those who have bought train tickets, flights, hotels and more.

If you know anyone who had plans for The European Games Week the Dublin Gaming Mini Con is a must for them. This will allow them to enjoy themselves this weekend as there are several events set up and they cater to everyone. I personally am impressed with what this collection of geeks is doing. They didn’t have to do but hopefully, this will help soothe the sting of the cancellation of The European Games Week.

European Games Week comes to Ireland from the 16th – 22nd of September at Croke Park. The event will feature 7 days of gaming, with over 10,000 attendees from around the world.

Featuring industry leaders at the European Games Summit & the best gaming has to offer at the European Games Festival.

This is all great to see. Watching gaming as an industry grow between all the cons that happen across the country all over the year is brilliant. However, I want to bring up something personal, something selfish and something I think you need to know if you’re still on the fence about heading to European games Week.

It is, of course, the special guests attending European Games Week between the 21st and the 22nd of September. I don’t know if you know who is attending but here is my look at the guest roster and how important they are.

Stephanie Panisello aka Claire Redfield

That’s right folks Claire Redfield from the critical darling that is Resident Evil 2 Remake will be attending the European Games Week. Stephanie has also had roles in Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy XV Episode Ardyn. Not only the kickass Claire will be attendance though. No, no Stephanie is a part of a terrific trio.

Nick Apostolides aka Leon Kennedy

In tow with the lovely Stephanie Pannisello is Nick Apostolides. This gentleman is Leon Kennedy her partner in crime in Resident Evil 2 Remake. Along with his role in Resident Evil 2 Remake Nick was also in Life is Strange 2 and The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit.

Jolene Andersen aka Ada Wong

Now along comes Jolene Andersen as the iconic third wheel in the Resident Evil franchise. That’s right Ada Wong from Resident Evil 2 Remake will be rounding out the trio from the Capcom horror franchise. Jolene also has an impressive CV as she has worked on Life is Strange 2 and Titanfall 2. Jolene will also be making an appearance in the final season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. coming in 2020.

Kira Buckland aka 2B

I’ve actually met Kira. She is a dote. She’s lovely, well-spoken and is an incredible talent. She’s not just one of the most iconic modern heroes in videogames (2B from NieR: Automata) she is also in a sizeable amount of anime and games. My particular favourites include Edna in Tales of Zestiria, Rin in Blue Exorcist, and her role as Naoka Ueno in the award-winning anime film A Silent Voice. Check out my interview with Kira on the GamEir podcast and see what you think 🙂

Hedy Burress aka Yuna

This is a guest that touches my heart. To meet Hedy who was a part of the first Final Fantasy with a voice cast will be quite monumental in my opinion. Not only that it can be argued that Yuna and Tidus have one of the best romances in all of Final Fantasy. They are in a sense the ultimate tragic couple in the whole Final Fantasy franchise and for those who’ve played Final Fantasy X you know exactly what I mean. Hedy has also continued to be a part of the Final Fantasy family as Yuna continues to pop up across other FF titles including the Dissidia games and the World of Final Fantasy. Plus she was a part of The Walking Dead: The Final Season game, which is a lovely bonus.

Reuben Langdon aka Dante

Okay so being completely honest with you here. Reuben Langdon is one of the key reasons I am attending the European Games Week. The guy has played Ken Masters in Street Fighter IV, been a part of the Power Rangers franchise and even has a place in the MCU. However, it is not these roles I’m particularly interested in. No, no it is the iconic, the legendary Dante from the Devil May Cry franchise. I can’t wait to meet the man who personified ‘badass’ in videogames for me for the past 14 years (crud I’m getting on).

It’s fair to say that European Games Week will have something on for everyone and this small section of what happens during the week is what I’m excited about. So if you’re still on the fence I hoped this helped. Like many gaming conventions, European Games Week is still in its infancy. So to help our industry and to bolster talent be sure and check it out.

Here’s a helpful link to the EGW site and let us know: What are you attending European Games Week for?

After the huge success of esports at Dublin Games (Now European Games) events last year, European Games Week (EGW) has announced the continuing support of its lead sponsor Marvin.ie.

This year will boast one of Ireland’s largest ever gathering of esports professionals from competitors to industry professionals from around the world. The European Games Week will host 4 tournaments with production experts Raid Studios this year and sponsored by Marvin.ie.

Sign Ups are now open and will remain open until the 24th of May. Each tournament will host the best production available for our local/national and international competitors. The competitive games announced are:

  • Overwatch
  • Rainbow Six Seige
  • Hearthstone
  • Rocket League

Each game will have a dedicated prize-pool and also a scaling prize-pool which will be boosted by sponsorship and ticket sales. A minimum guarantee of €1,500.00 per team is also in place making it one of the biggest esports tournaments of the year.

The esports tournaments will take place as online qualifiers between the 31st May and the June 21st (Depending on the game). From that, the finalists will be awarded entry to European Games Week between 6th & 7th of July at the RDS and the chance to compete for the European Esports Championship Trophy and cash prize.

Along with the competitive event, European Games Week will host a 2-day industry summit with one room dedicated to esports. Attracting leaders in the field of esports from Ireland/UK/Europe and the United States.

Each talk will present a unique look on the industry, how to get involved and ultimately how to become prosperous in the esports scene. Along with this will also be esports workshops to help delve in deeper with hands-on experience to what makes esports so big.

When EGW asked Marvin.ie why they are leading the charge in esports support in Ireland they had this to say:
When did you first sponsor esports in Ireland and with whom?

It all started when our Managing Director came across RAID on the internet in 2017. We got in touch with them and a partnership emerged that allowed us to know and understand much more of the market here in Ireland.

What leads to that decision?

We are part of the Hungry Group which is based in Denmark. Over there, they are all game savvy and involved in Esports sponsorships for a while. So it was always on the radar, firstly because we identify with the public a lot! and we know that ordering food is “part of the routine”. And secondly, because we are completely aware of the magnitude that the market is taking and we want to be part of it!

How has presenting yourself in that space been received?

As I mentioned before, the link is almost natural and as we want to engage in a genuine way, the public has received us very well and with that, the business opportunities only increase as well!

Why do you continue to support esports in Ireland?

Marvin will become THE CHOICE among the players in Ireland, and to get there we have to be present! I think the approach is pretty much the same, we are taking seriously the idea to take over the games scene, but having fun at the same time, enjoying as they do when playing or working to developing a new game for example.

Why are you supporting EGW?

Being part of the DGF (Dublin Games Festival) last year was a success and showed us the potential of the event for this year. We know EGW is the place to be, the team behind it knows exactly what to do, puts us in front of people who matter to Marvin and our goals.
