I’ve been playing a lot of remakes recently. From Spyro Reignited Trilogy to Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled it’s been a lot of fun. However, it wasn’t until I recently finished Final Fantasy VII Remake that I began to think, what comes next? Yes, we’ve got a lot of games coming out and as the world is we have all the time in the world to play them. Then it occurred to me. I have access to PlayStation Now. So I booted it up and a game I never got the opportunity to play during the PS3 Generation popped up Asura’s Wrath.

After a few hours playing it, I have come to the realisation that Asura’s Wrath deserves its own remaster.

An epic tale of demi-gods & destruction

If you haven’t played it I’ll break down Asura’s Wrath for you. You play as the demi-god Asura. He is one of eight guardian generals who is tasked with protected Gaea against the mythical Ghoma a race of demonic beings. This is an endless cycle where the guardian generals fight back this ancient beast that leads the Ghoma and after a couple thousand years the beast returns. During one such cycle, the leader of the generals realises that the beast will eventually win and so decides to take matters into his own hands.

When his plans are realised Asura and his family are sadly victims of his machinations. With his wife dead and his daughter being used to literally fuel the war Asura is effectively killed, and that’s where the game begins!

Why Asura’s Wrath deserves a remaster

So the gameplay of Asura’s Wrath is in the style of an arena beat ’em up. It has also been described as an “interactive anime” due to its graphical style and use of Quicktime events. Even the levels are broken up into approximately 20-minute episodes.

With a solid team behind it, Asura’s Wrath could easily be brought to the current generation. Its combat system could be further polished, the already stylistic and charming animation could be improved and all the DLC could be packed into one definitive bundle.

In my opinion though the main reason for a game like this to be brought into the remaster realm is that it can obviously be improved on and made into something truly memorable. After all the reasons all the others worked so well was because the teams behind them knew what needed to be improved upon. With the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, the artwork was what worked so well. The gameplay was cleaned up but it was the artistic design that made it so compelling. With Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled their team knew that with the current technology we have there were a lot of avenues to explore for improvement. Graphics obviously but also they included new characters, new courses and an online Grand Prix mode.

When it came to Final Fantasy VII Remake Square Enix simply went with a more cinematic approach to the story and utilised lessons they had learned from recent titles such as Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts to give players a different kind of experience when it came to combat.

Asura's Wrath

Asura’s Remake

In my opinion, all that would be done with Asura’s Wrath is a mixture of combat enhancement and graphical updates. The story is already easily accessible so all that is needed is a tune-up.

If you’d like to try Asura’s Wrath it’s available on the PlayStation Now and it’s been a lot of fun playing this title that I missed. So are there any old titles that you think deserve that fresh coat of paint that a “remake” offers? Let me know in the comments. I will be sure to continue these articles as I come across games I think deserve it.
