I was lucky enough to receive a review code for Guilty Gear -Strive-. This title for anyone who is a fan of Beat ‘Em Ups is something special. I myself am something of a fan. I dip my toe into the genre whenever I see something fun.
I’ve played several of the Mortal Kombats, a few from the Dead or Alive franchise, and most recently I fell in love with Dragon Ball FighterZ. This got me ready to head back into the hallowed halls of an Arc System Works title.
Guilty Gear -Strive- is the latest in a very special franchise. I remember years ago playing a Guilty Gear title and being completed intimated by it. The lore, the characters and the combos went way over my head. Now a decade or so later I return to this maniacal world of demons and gods and everything in between.
Guilty Gear -Strive-: Gears, Gears and more gears
Guilty Gear -Strive- as a game does not deviate from the franchise. As I traversed the tower in the online section I couldn’t help but be impressed by the community. I also couldn’t help but be blown away by the history section which breaks down the whole franchise’s lore. That is not all I have to say though.
The graphics of Guilty Gear -Strive- are exceptional. The characters leap off the screen. Their overexaggerated abilities are enhanced by the stylistic animations. You get lost as they move seamlessly from combo to combo bringing down your opponents in style. Yet the game never feels like it overwhelms you. In fact quite the opposite. This is easily the most welcoming Guilty Gear title I’ve ever experienced.
One of the more fascinating elements of the game is its Story Mode. It’s a glorified anime series and each episode is approximately 20 minutes. It’s pretty great and continues the epic tale of this world in an interesting manner.
Also due to its impressive online mode, you’ll never be wanting for opponents. The roster is also filled with a menagerie of oddball characters. Each of them is unique and full of twists and turns you need to learn to unlock their full potential. There are also new characters coming to the roster keeping replayability at an all-time high.
