It’s not often that a friend gets in touch and wants me to bring something up that they feel should be recognised. Today was different though. A friend sent me a link via Twitter about a game that was being funded on Kickstarter. I had never heard of it or its predecessor but when I saw the description for The Darkside Detective: Season 2 I thought, “hey I have some level of influence let’s see what I can do”.
What immediately struck me were the visuals. The team at Spooky Doorway have done their darndest to bring back that nostalgic feeling gamers felt as children with the point and click adventures of old. It’s wonderfully charming and the aesthetics of The Darkside Detective: Season 2 are but only a fraction that pulls you to this surreal Cthulhu realm. There is also the biting comedic writing.
I found myself chuckling several times as the trailer showed off the many misadventures our hero gets into during this particular case. My personal favourite involves a luchador. It’s this surrealistic attitude that harkens back to the Sam and Max video games that makes this such a fascinating title.
If there were any issues with The Darkside Detective: Season 2 it would be that it’s on Kickstarter. Meaning there is always the risk you may not get this game. There is a sense that even though Ireland turns out a lot of creative talent a majority of it is never seen and appreciated. Yes, the team at Spooky Doorway have The Darkside Detective: Season 1 but they clearly want to bring another set adventures to their fans. And why shouldn’t they? After watching the trailer I couldn’t believe I had never heard of this game, the number of awards it won was impressive.
Not only that the end of the trailer is wonderfully subversive giving the game and the team behind it a wonderful sense of personal attachment to you their potential partners.
So be sure and check out The Darkside Detective: Season 1, there’s even an opportunity free of charge to check out the first two cases of the game.
I’ve learned a lot over the past couple of years about the arts in Ireland and it saddens me I will be honest. I won’t go into detail but a game like this with so much passion and talent behind it deserves the chance to get made.
I hope you check it out and please let me know how you get on I know I’ll be checking out the first title because why would you go into the second game without playing the first one? 😉
