So, I finally got to sit down with Alien. Fun fact, this is my first ever tabletop RPG. The whole idea of them has fascinated me ever since I got into Magic the Gathering. What can I say? I like nerd stuff. Huge thank you again to Free League Publishing for giving me the chance to check this out in full!
I got to check out the Alien Starter Set and Destroyer of Worlds. I’ve been a fan of this franchise since I was a kid, so this made me insanely excited. Plus, we’ve all seen the different formats and entries the franchise has been hit with throughout the years. A tabletop RPG is actually a very smart move on this front. What a way to expand on an already epic series. I’m trying not to go too far into horror nerd mode.
Aliens?! Let’s talk!
What’s in the box?! Cool things!
The boxes are full of epicness, honestly. Character profiles, maps, agendas. Even just opening the boxes was fun as heck. The starter set also came with the rulebook and Chariot of the Gods. There are also two ways to play the game: cinematic play and campaign play. Cinematic play is based on pre-made scenarios that emulate the dramatic arc of an ALIEN film. Campaign play is designed for longer continuous play with the same cast of player characters over many game sessions, letting you explore the ALIEN universe freely.
What I really want to emphasise is found in the rulebook. Chariot of the Gods and Destroyer of Worlds both offer awesome cinematic scenarios, and so much fun to be had. However, the rulebook was so important to me. Everything is laid out so clearly in a way that even someone who has NEVER tried tabletop can make sense of. It shed so much light on the game overall, and how to play. It also left me with a strong urge to be a Game Mother for it. Also, massive nice touch for the epilogues including the type of Xenomorphs and Neomorphs, and their evolutions.
Thoughts?
Alien RPG has genuinely added to the iconic franchise. On the tabletop front, I am beyond excited that this was my first adventure into that world. I was hoping to have some minis to paint alongside this, just to combine my interests. Unfortunately, they are stuck in a post office in a totally different part of the country. One day…
But overall, I am really enjoying delving into this game. I cannot wait to be able to play this with friends in the future. I’m also massively excited for what’s to come. As well as stimulating my brain, my horror heart is also very happy. Extra shoutout to Free League Publishing for adding such an epic entry to a long-running horror franchise. It is a breath of fresh air and adds new life to a series that honestly may not have lasted much longer.
