The horror queen has returned to ramble and rave about something she actually knows! It is coming up on Halloween, which means I am in my element. At least, I am with the seasons. Today, I want to talk to everyone about The Medium. I am going to focus in on the Dual Reality system, but first, let me introduce you to the game.
The Medium is an upcoming third person psychological horror game from Bloober Team, the studio behind Layers of Fear, Blair Witch and Observer. And that’s just to name a few. The Medium will be coming to PC and Xbox Series X/S in December. Discover a dark mystery that can only be solved by a medium, and simultaneously explore both the real and spirit worlds. Solve puzzles using psychic abilities in both worlds, unearth dark secrets, and survive encounters with the monstrous The Maw.
Dual Medium!
Now, let’s talk about the Dual Reality. Dual Reality is something that has been patented for this game. In one way, it is very much “does what it says on the tin”. However, in the other way, it is so much deep than initially thought. To put it in the most basic terms, you can play and move in both worlds at once. Think like a split screen kind of thing. On one side, you’ll have the real world, and on the other, the spirit world. Your character, Marianne, will move in both worlds through the same controls. In some instances though, you won’t be able to interact with things in one world, but will in the other. Another cool implementation for this Dual Reality feature is the differing amount of screen space. If one world is of more relevance, it will take up more screen space.
Of course, you will be able to swap between being in the real world or the spirit world, depending on the point in the story. Two thirds of the game will be spent in one or the other. The rest is then using the Dual Reality feature.
Thoughts?
I don’t know about everyone else, but consider my interest peaked. I was curious about The Medium anyways, the trailers drew me in from the initial announcement. On top of that, I am a fan of Bloober Team already (even if I do have my complaints about Blair Witch). So, give me an interesting looking horror game and I’m already in. Give me a name I’m not only familiar with, but a fan of? You’ve got me hooked. And now we’re seeing a totally new and unique way of playing? Yes please!
If Bloober Team and The Medium can pull this off, this is something that could be massively revolutionary for the horror and gaming worlds. I am so beyond ready for this game. Also, can we take a moment to appreciate all the hard work that all devs and publishers are putting in to come up with these new and unique ideas? This isn’t the first game I’ll talk about with a unique feature, and it definitely won’t be the last.
